caltrans is on day two of its emergency repairs of a cracked steel beam. linda yee is at the san mateo bridge to let us know how it's going. >> reporter: good morning. if you do use the san mateo/hayward bridge for your commuted hour you may want to think of an alternate route this morning because a significant portion of that far right westbound lane is still closed at this hour. now, caltrans has been working to repair that 10" crack in the steel beam's roadway. the crack was discovered during a routine investigation on tuesday. engineers are installing a 1.5" steel plate on top and bottom of that crack. failure happened on part of the beam that was installed in 2001 in the effort to strengthen the bridge in case of an earthquake. caltrans says that despite the crack, the bridge is still not in any danger of collapse. the highway patrol says that this one lane closure did result in some heavy backups during the morning commute. but really no disastrous traffic jams. but again, on this friday commute, it could be different. so you might want to think alte

a crack was found in a steel beam.allows the bridge to roll with the punches if the earthquake should strike. jeff bookish takes a look. >> their repair parts there were five barricaded their 6 ft. long and have a been to them. they will go for a steel beam that has it tannage crack. the beam was installed 10 years ago to make it seismically safe. it will reinforce the beam so will not have to be removed. they have closed down the road here for about a mile. work crews got busy on the repair early this morning but the crack be ms. not easy to get to. they have to use this crane to get to the team it articulates over the side of the bridge and underneath. here's a closer look. it's not clear why it cracked they are researching causes engineers are taking all look at similar pieces on the bridge. at san mateo bridge kron 4 news. >> a live look at your commute erica is tracking them. >> we are delays free very few cars a outside right now that could change as a commute wears on probably expect the same conditions as yeste

they discovered a cracked steel girder. amy hollyfield is there. far westbound lane is still closed for repairs, is that right? >> it is. they are hoping to get it open by tomorrow afternoon but it could take longer than that. the goal is to get it open by tomorrow night's commute. they found the crack in a routine inspection a safety one they do twice a year. this crack is in a steel beam that is part of the retrofit work put in place in 2001. this is part that allows the bridge to move and roll in an earthquake. so it doesn't pose a huge threat but they have to fix it now. >> tomorrow morning is going to be rough. if you normally use that bridge, we are expecting a lot more congestion. you definitely want to use an alternate route, dumbarton or bay bridge. do expect delays tomorrow. >> reporter: crack is ten inches long. it's underneath the road on the westbound side. they are bringing in two steel beams and hoping to have it done by tomorrow afternoon. so the far right lane is closed, not the entire length of the bridge but pretty small section
