caltrans is on day two of its emergency repairs of a cracked steel beam. linda yee is at the san mateo bridge to let us know how it's going. >> reporter: good morning. if you do use the san mateo/hayward bridge for your commuted hour you may want to think of an alternate route this morning because a significant portion of that far right westbound lane is still closed at this hour. now, caltrans has been working to repair that 10" crack in the steel beam's roadway. the crack was discovered during a routine investigation on tuesday. engineers are installing a 1.5" steel plate on top and bottom of that crack. failure happened on part of the beam that was installed in 2001 in the effort to strengthen the bridge in case of an earthquake. caltrans says that despite the crack, the bridge is still not in any danger of collapse. the highway patrol says that this one lane closure did result in some heavy backups during the morning commute. but really no disastrous traffic jams. but again, on this friday commute, it could be different. so you might want to think alte
