i have a lot of exposure to the mine workers and steelworkers union. in the 1960's and 1970's, there was a strong culture. i would say stronger than it is today. it was a much bigger part of people's lives. the union hall, the pride of being in the organization, constantly wearing pants identifying people's -- pins identifying people's identity with the union. we need to move toward rebuilding that. do unions have ritual ceremonies and rites? they do, but i do not know what degree -- to what degree we think about how they build participation. i am not sure that these kind of rituals and rites are practice the way they used to be. it is important we think about what culture is -- what aspects of culture going to be effective today. the culture that was effective 30 years ago may not be as effective. new member orientation, i have done a lot of work in that issue and if you ask me the one thing unions can do to build greater participation, the most cost- effective thing is to do a high- quality new member orientation program for every member that comes in

steelworkers, including his current position with figure. he previously spent 14 years as the first responders, medical officer, emergency medical technician, and safety officer. he has conducted numerous training for union members on osha standards and workplace health and safety. cathy, let's start with you. many people probably do not think of health care workers when they think of osha. you do face dangers on your job. talk a little bit about some of the dangers that health care workers face, your personal experiences, and how osha has helped to make things better over the years. >> every day, health care workers walked into a disease- infested workplace. they do on christmas and holidays. it is a dangerous place to work, but it is also an exciting and rewarding place to work. since 1979, things have changed so much in the workplace as far as safety. early in my career, a nurse was inadvertently stuck with a needle and contracted hepatitis. she later died from complications of hepatitis. 17,000 of my colleagues in the 1980's died or contracted hepatitis in that time. since osha has instituted safety regulations for blood borne pathogens, that has fallen. 97% of the workers go to work everyday and do
