right after workers for stellantis, the old name stellantis was chrysler, a plant in toledo, they make the jeep chero key, union -- cherokee, we both drive them, my wife and i, one saved me after a kid driving hit the side-my car while sitting and virtually no injury. i went to the picket line friday morning, talked with a lot of workers. i know many of them. there are 6,000 at this plant. 1,000 -- actually 1,100 of these workers at this stellantis plant, at the jeep plant rb on a tear -- are on a tiered wage system where they make fewer than $19 and something an hour, some have been there one year, two years, some five at six years, yet they make less than $19 an hour. the reason for that is when chrysler and g.m. were in serious trouble, the government held, the union in order to save these plants and save essentially the automobile industry, they did major givebacks of their wages and benefits. so management insisted and the workers went along to major pay cuts, set up a tiered wage system. new workers, hundreds and hundreds, over a thousand at a plant of over 6,000 workers were mak

versus stellantis and gm that rely a little more on mexico.point, ford is a little more disadvantaged than gm, especially stellantis. historically, they have generally maintained better relations with labor that we have seen at the other two automakers. so we have had a sense that there was a better setup. we saw ford reach a deal with canadian workers and the canadian union. so it's not a surprise that we saw there is progress. we think perhaps a reasonable scenario is that in the next week or so, there is full resolution. at the other two, at gm and stellantis, gm, maybe it will take a little longer. our assumption is that a lot of what's going on at this point, there will be some discussion on wages and cola, but another key discussion point, and this is what is different, is product allocation, plant closures. we have seen reports that stellantis wants to close 18 plants, and that's probably a sticking point in these discussions. >> so what would you do if you were the ceo here? >> i think that the automakers are trying to obviously put ou

as you look at shares of stellantis, we have not heard about this happening with any stellantis facilities, but stellantis is set up just as general motors and ford are. i wouldn't be surprised, melissa, if we hear some type of similar announcement from stellantis in the days ahead. melissa? >> phil, the word layoff, does that mean that these workers are fired? it's not a furlough. they're not being held. they're not being paid, obviously. do they file for unemployment at this point? >> they're not fired. they file for unemployment and it means that the automakers are not on the hook to pay them. and that means they go through the state, whichever state, the facility is located in, then you get into the labor and employment laws within that state. so they're laid off, essentially. furloughed might be the official term in some facilities. they're not fired. when the strike ends, these workers, nine times out of ten, they get hired back, unless somebody has decided, i don't want to go back to work, i've decided to move on. but the auto workers, they plan to bring these people back to work wh

stellantis. stellantis today, according to a source familiar with the uaw, the uaw submitted a counterproposal to stellantis. this is one of those things people are saying, how often are they submitting proposals, counterproposals? there's always discussions, but this was a formal counterproposal from the uaw to stellantis. no comment from stellantis on what was in that proposal. and look at shares of ford and gm. and the reason we're putting this up is because in the middle of the day, there was a report from bloomberg citing sources saying that the uaw was aiming for at least a 30% increase in wages and cost of living adjustments over the life of this contract. that's significant, because initially the uaw said we want 40%. now, there was no comment from the uaw about this report. we reached out to them repeatedly, the uaw said it declined to comment on this report, but those are two things that moved shares of gm, ford, and stellantis during the day today. in terms of what to expect tomorrow,

it makes it challenging for gm, ford and stellantis to continue their operation. doesn't make it impossible but it makes it more challenging. in the process, it ratchets up the pressure on them to make further concessions. and you have to also remember that for the uaw, part of this is not just putting pressure on ford, gm and stellantis, but also to rally their members. if they call every so often another strike, every time they call a strike, that galvanizes the membership. they sit there and they say, yep, we're putting further pressure on our respective company we work for. so, that's the whole strategy here as opposed to shutting down an entire automaker all at one time. >> phil, you've already done so much work this morning. we're just getting started. we'll talk soon again, i'm sure. phil lebeau again on the uaw strike. meantime, jpmorgan turning bullish on energy globally after the recent pullback. why they say now is the time to buy. >>> plus, a day after announcing layoffs, deere gets its second downgrade of the week. we'll get to those of those calls ne

gm and stellantis, the talks continue there. it's not as though it's only uaw and ford where talks are happening. it's also continuing with gm and stellantis. right now, about 12% of the uaw membership for the big three are on strike. even though this is getting a ton of attention and it's significant, especially at the plants where they shut down production or at the parts and distribution centers, keep in mind you have 88% of the, aw members who continue to work and 85% of the production for the big three, it continues. it has not stopped. one other thing, as you look at shares of gm, ford and stellantis. ford got good news that the rank and file north of the border, the uaw counterpart up there, they approved a new contract. now those negotiations move forward. that's good because it perhaps gives a template in terms of what we might expect when it comes to the uaw negotiations. it's a separate situation up there than it is here in the united states, but i think they got a 24%, 25% pay raise ultimately. a lot of people believ

the union at stellantis made a new contract offer.als at general motors insist uaw's demands remain too high. su keenan joins us with the latest. the union has been pushing for a wage increase of 36%. su: that is way too high for gm and they are not accepting that their offer was rejected five days ago. but stellantis, the maker of the jeeps and chrysler models has made a new contract offer. uaw is not sharing the details of the proposal but they say they are reviewing it. this united autoworkers labor action has already made history in striking against numerous automakers. now for the first time 190 uaw workers struck a zf plant in tuscaloosa, alabama that provides axles for mercedes-benz vehicles. while uaw represents various supply plans, these workers declared their own strike. there is momentum building here. stellantis said it will temporarily lay off 68 employees at its ohio machining plant as a result of the strikes. gm has also idled an assembly plant in fairfax, kansas. that uaw president has said more plans face walkouts if

the union is targetting plants owned by general motors, ford, and stellantis. biden has sent two officials to detroit, michigan to assist with the negotiations. until a deal is made, targeted strikes are taking place at a general motors assembly facility in wentzville, missouri, a ford motor assembly plant in wayne, michigan, and a jeep stellantis assembly complex in toledo, ohio. a short while ago, i spoke to auto reporter for the new york times in michigan, neal boudette. thanks for being with us. neal, the union and three car makers have resumed negotiations. do we know how those talks are progressing? well, we know that they met with the three different companies today and the union did put out a statement that they said they made reasonably good progress with ford, which is not really high praise, and obviously they pointedly left out any mention of gm and stellantis. so i think you can assume that from today they made a little bit of progress with ford and no progress with the other two. so neal, talk to us about what those on strike are calling for and w
