and steny hoyer went on to be majority leader. so many years you had the two most powerful people in congress, nancy pelosi, you know, two heartbeats away from the president. he is speaker of the house and steny hoyer as majority. and they were on my dad's staff together at the same time. and they, you know, for decades to come, became great rivals. but friends and they were both very loyal and supportive of him. and he able to get a lot of legislation accomplished. and i know we'll talk in a minute. and john and charlie and i'll all have something to say about his his 64 presidential primary run. but on the legislative front, i want to just mention two things. assateague island was slated for development. it was going to be like ocean city and it was danny brewster's bill sb 20 that he was the sole sponsor of. and he got many of his colleagues in the us senate to co-sponsor that. that created the assateague island national seashore, had not been for danny brewster and that bill, assateague island would have looked like ocean. so

and that was minority leader john boehner and then majority leader steny hoyer, both of whom i count as mentor and friends. now, but at the time and trying to in seeking to do good, i didn't know the effect i was having. and so that's come a long way. what advice did those two men give you over the years that you recall that that sticks with you both in the nature, the of leadership, of how to lead the institution, how to lead people in an institution. speaker boehner was a truly adept leader of the house. and what he would say is one of his key jobs is speaker is to manage disappointment. people in this institution and you have to come to terms with the fact you're not going to get everything they want. and how you handle that is really important because it's meaningful to them. it's meaningful to them, it's meaningful to their careers and what they're trying to trying to do. steny hoyer showed me that you can have good friends on both sides of the aisle, even if you disagree, even if you have vigorous debates where maybe your motions get the best or you can still have a relationshi
