stephanie and i'm stephanie angleson. if you're not directly affected by iowa's medicaid program you likely know somebody who is. stephanie: it's one in five... 560-thousand iowans are in the middle of watching their healthcare change hands. while there are still many questions and concerns, today marks an important day in the transition. february 17th - is the deadline for people to pick which private want to manage coverage. another important date is less than two weeks away. march 1st is when iowa is supposed to be changed over from medicaid to managed care. stephanie: local five's chief political correspondent "countdown to update. as you medicaid is a huge program... a 4.2 billion dollar state-run program. hundreds of thousands of iowans benefit from it, and at this point it's on track to change hands in 13 days. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2bam and i'm jack miller. tonight, iowa finally has federal approval to go forward with the governor's plan to privatize medicaid. but the switch over date is being delayed. jack: it's the update everyone was waiting for, as we continue local 5's countdown to coverage. jack: this afternoon, the federal centers for medicare and medicaid gave its approval for the change. medicaid coverage in iowa will now switch hands from a state-run program to three private managed care companies. but the federal agency bumped back the start date from march 1st to april 1st. stephanie: the plan moves forward and those who use medicaid need to choose a provider. stephanie/bam: this change affects every one and five iowans--that's more than half a million people who rely on medicaid care, right now. the deadline for them to sign up for a plan was last wednesday,but it's not just iowans who have to sign up with the managed care companies. jack: the hospitals and doctors who provide the care have to sign contracts with these manag
