stephanie chuang is live with this search for the gunman that continues. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. you know, that's a pretty busy stretch of the freeway even at night when this happened. the question now for police here at the headquarters is who is responsible for this freeway shooting. it all happened just before 11:00 last night when oakland police got the call from someone driving eastbound on 580 who heard gun fire. when officers arrived at the fruitvale exit they found a car. the driver suffered at least one gun shot and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. police say there was a passenger in the car who was not hit. a witness reportedly saw a man limping away from the scene. information slow this morning. traffic flowed to a crawl after officers shut down the eastbound lane. oakland investigators could search in and around that car for clues. officers did reopen the lanes around 2:15 this morning. but right now investigators telling us they have no suspect information so that's what they are focused on, trying to get

stephanie chuang is live at the school where parents are to make an announcement. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's very quiet out here, of course it is early but there's one person watching for security whereas there had been several. we're told there are ten or so tents, people not only standing their ground, they have more activities including a march for public education tomorrow. this even though there were police warnings earlier this week from the oakland school district, they came to the school to make sure classrooms were safe and they were not damaged. this was hours after police warned protesters that they had to leave or possibly get arrested. one teacher we spoke with this morning tells us she's not worried. >> yeah, i think people are feeling excited about the school, you know, and getting to see the kids do like a summer school in a building that was supposed to be district offices so i think that's we're more focused on that. of course it's hard for us to see cops come when parents are intimidated by that. i think mostly we see ki

stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> 6:32. two men charged in the beating of bryan stow will be arraigned in hours. a judge has now ruled there is enough evidence to try luis sanchez and marvin norwood for the assault on stowe in march. during a preliminary hearing there was dramatic witness testimony about the attack. stow suffered severe brain damage and is permanently disabled. >> 6:32. a father accused of abducting hisdaughters will be in court. police say he allegedly threatened to hurt the children during a confrontation with his wife on june 14. she has a restraining order against him. the abduction was prompted -- prompted rather, an amber alert but the kids were returned safely to their grandmother. >> a fund-raiser will be held in oakland to benefit the families of two east bay men killed in a boating accident. friends johnny johnson of hayward and acemoore pittman of oakland were fishing in the delta on saturday. they drowned when their boat capsized. a third man on board survived. johnson and pittman leave a total

nbc bay area's stephanie chuang was there when officers arrived to evict them. stephanie, what's going on now? >> reporter: well, actually, protesters are still here. they say they're not going anywhere. but lakeview elementary here, one of five schools planned for closures, in the process of it, actually. about an hour ago, parents, teachers, activists went inside the building, quote, reopening the school, day four of their encampment, nine tents out here. oakland police's regular squad in this area spotted the tents and thought it was occupy oakland, so when they found out it wasn't, they left. but not five minutes later, officers arrived again, this time with the district and this time with a stern warning. they actually passed out these flyers, saying leave, don't come back, or get arrested. >> i'm not here to make my conversations or discuss anything. so have a good day. >> reporter: police were quickly confronted by a smul group of protesters demanding answers. troy flint says there is no timetable on enforcement and they aren't planning on taking action t

stephanie chuang is live in berkeley. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, sadly, one young woman who lived in one of the upper floors of the house, died in the fire that started around 2:30 this morning. right now firefighters are on scene actually pulling some of the hoses out but waiting for the building to vent out a little before they can go back in and check for hot spots. this is where eight people were sleeping inside when flames ignited in this three-story victorian home. so far investigators believe it did start in the back. that's where people tell us flames were shooting out, dozens of berkeley firefighters responded within minutes. they tried to make rescues, everyone made it out except that young woman. neighbors tried to save any one but hit a wall of smoke and were forced out. one man was calling to his girlfriend but there was no response. as the flames grew by the second. >> the flames were going up and out, and it was like a huge fire. like a huge bonfire but a house. when it's that huge you don't know whether the house will collapse.

stephanie chuang is live at the scene with the latest.g. >> reporter: good morning, jon. people were camped out overnight, no plans on leaving though a district police officer was waiting across the street, keeping a close eye on this camp. seems the district wants to keep a close eye but no plans on leaving. if or when the district will take wx their police officers coming out to enforce a warning, it came yesterday, flyers warning protesters to leave, not come back for 30 days or risk getting arrested. the protesters were given a couple of days to express themselves but now are trespassing. if they don't leave they may be escorted off the property and if they don't comply, possibly arrested. the people here say they don't want the district plan to go into effect to turn the building here at lake view elementary into district offices so they went in, opened the building as a classroom for summer school and today, this morning at 9:00 will open to kids who want to come for the second day of class. live in oakland, "today in the bay." dwl

stephanie chuang is there live with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this fire coming in around 2:30 this morning, unfortunately it did claim the life of one young woman. this is the house. the three-story small victorian home and one person was not able to make it out and pronounced here at the scene by firefighters responding. again, happening at 2:30 this morning. there were eight people sleeping inside at the time. five who live there and three visiting actually. right now firefighters are allowing the house to vent before they go in but right now we're going to be joined by the next door neighbor, bob, who was here in all of the action. you woke up and you smelled something. >> yeah. it smelled like paper burning. so i said well, maybe i better investigate. i went down stairs to see if anything was burning in the kitchen and looked out and saw flames. >> the back of the house. tell me more about what happened. you tried to go and save the people inside? >> well, i came out and there were people outside and i asked if everybody was accounted for an

stephanie chuang joins us live with the clues investigators already have. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this has become such a big case that help is coming in from across the country. in fact, lila the dog from courtland fire and rescue just arrived minutes ago. she's trained in -- she's trained in sniffing out accelerants, detecting accelerants, i should say, so 22 of those special agents from the atf, special national response team, is actually on scene. they've been combing through the scene for the last couple of hours. you can see just the debris here at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station, what was the senior housing complex under construction went up in flames. that was last thursday. so what they're going to do today is sift through the evidence from the top down, and the goal in all of this is to pinpoint the origin of this fire in hopes of determining whether this was a case of arson. flames shot into the sky burning down an unfinished senior housing complex early thursday morning. the question a week later remains -- did somebo
