stephanie chuang has a look with how the city is planning to crack down on the crime. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. the crackdown on this crime may require some outside help. police chief chris moore telling us he could be calling the california highway patrol as early as today and to be clear it's a start of a discussion of a possible collaboration. this as you mentioned as the police department is facing the 31st homicide in the city this year. it was just after 8:30 last night when somebody stabbed a man in his 20s in a safe way off of story and south white road. the person died in the produce aisle of the store. chief moore thinks it's premature to work with chp right now but willing to start that discussion an it's a move other city leaders say is critical. >> do everything that we, that we can to make our streets safer and if that means to accept an offer from the state to help bring in more resources, you know, in the form of california highway patrol, then i think that we're obligated to accept it. >> reporter: and so again the chief may be call

stephanie chuang is live at sfo where they will leave this morning.porter: good morning to you, marla. we know that a group of local folks from the american red cross will be heading out from here and mineta san jose, sometime today, may be in the afternoon most of them to leave. a spokesperson telling us this morning that the group hasn't determined exactly when yet. but what we know is 15ç volunteers from twoç chapters e leaving. another 11 from the silicon valley chapter heading to miami, tampa and orlando to get ready for the arrival of tropical storm isaac. they are a handful of hundreds of trained workers headed out where the red cross has been preparing to set up dozens of shelters across the state. they are said to be 50 response vehicles there with another 78 on standby. and volunteers including from our area will do everything from supervising those vehicles toç m9ñ also to counseling and emotional support. our local men and women heading there will be on disaster assignment for from two to three weeks and most of them have been on disast

stephanie chuang joins us live from mountain view's nasa ames research center. a look at the bay area's role in the mission. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a huge role did nasa ames play in this mission. we're told an estimated 7,000 people came here last night just to watch it. we hear there was a dance party. someone here also was nasa ames research scientist michael sims, good morning. you have been part of the mars program for nasa for 25 years. can you put it into perspective what the landing means. >> it's great. not only exciting but scientifically we get to the place we want to be. we want to know what's happening on mars. and sort of symbolically, the first images you saw had a dust cover over them. once the dust cover was removed you could see clearly. that's what a mission gives us. >> ames played a huge role. there is the heat shield and this parachute for the seven minutes of landing. tell us about that. >> so we tested the parachute in our wind tunnel. we have the largest wind tunnel in the world so we put it inside and blew the wind tunn

stephanie chuang is live with the latest. do police know where he's headed? >> reporter: they have a feeling. he's got some connections to sacramento county. so that is where they're looking right now. we also know that suspect's name is 19-year-old marcus hernandez who police believe is not only armed with a handgun but potentially unstable because he had just gotten into a heated argument with his girlfriend when he allegedly pointed the gun at her and forced her and their 2-month-old baby into a car. this afternoon, we got some video of the 17-year-old angelica lopez and her 2-month-old baby girl in a car seat in the back of an unmarked patrol car. investigators following up on leads found the two just after 2:30 this afternoon at a house. we are not identified where this is for the victim's safety because it's still unclear how they ended up there. now, friends had been hosting the couple and the baby for some months at their apartment in oakland. they called police after 11:00 last night and said hernandez was hitting lopez in the face and neck, then too
