stephanie elam has been on the phone as well, another cnn correspondent. stephanie, can you hear me? >> reporter: i hear you, jim. >> what are you seeing on the other side of the police headquarters in terms of police movements? >> reporter: similar to what we just heard martin say. they are out here, they are definitely still holding up this perimeter. it's not as if they are ducking behind anything. it does not look like they -- [ inaudible ] -- i am on the same street, just further down, on the other side of d.a.r.t. [ inaudible ] you talked about people who are walking in the streets, where i am now, i do see some police officers telling them to get back, stay back, move over, get out of the way. [ inaudible ] >> we know the context, this is a police department, a city that lost five of its officers in a horrible shooting. they have seven more that are injured, some still recovering from gunshot wounds. they're going to take every threat very seriously. we have ed lavandera on the phone right now. ed, i know you've been talking to the police. have they

i want to go to our stephanie elam. she's been down been the scene there. stephanie, are you able to show us pictures. you're back. cameras are back on. before we turned the cameras off. what are you seeing there and what are you hearing now? >> i'm back in front of camera. we're still not shooting down towards the police headquarters because they said that preliminary check turned up nothing but they're going through with the second canine check. we're not going to rush the gun here and make a decision that may be too fast here. i can tell you that there's something that reminds me a bit of when i was on ucla campus a few weeks ago. there is a definite stiffening of posture. there's a stiffness. the same thing happened out here with the police officers on the street. you can tell there was a change in tone as far as as they were looking at what was going on here. there are now some police officers that are standing in the middle of street. there's some on the sides. it seems things have relaxed here even with the helicopter that flew over police headquarter

stephanie elam, thanks so much. again, you are watching protesters again out tonight on the streets. the context far different than it was 24 hours ago when the peaceful protest here was getting under way. there is obviously an edge to all of this right now. police obviously sizing things up with different eyes. they have to. we have heard calls for unity, calls for calm, but also reminders including from hillary clinton today. she says the marchers still have legitimate grievances no matter what happened here in dallas. more now on the killer. what authorities have found on his home and what appears to have motivated him. ed, you have been working the ground not just here but at the killer's home not far from here. what are authorities saying they found? >> it's interesting, as the authorities here in downtown dallas in the middle of that standoff, investigators and detectives were already showing up at micah johnson's home in mesquite which is a suburb, around a 30-minute drive east of town, they showed up just af

stephanie elam is at baylor hospital. martin, if i could start with you, police careful about putting together a profile of this man who they sill believe worked alone. what have they learned about him now? is any of it helpful? >> reporter: well they are learning a lot. whether it's helpful that's still to be revealed by investigators. as you point here is authorities want to figure out did anyone help him. they believe this was the work of trammingically, one individual. but what they want to make sure is, was there anyone who helped plan, in other words coconspirators. may have been only one person carrying to the act but were there others who helped in some way to carry out the act before it happened. that's purpose of the investigation. it's will they are also still combing through the crime scene that exists in the heart of downtown right now. talking about the military that micah johnson had, the gunman here, he served in the army reserves and for a time was deployed overseas in afghanistan. cnn learned during that

cnn's stephanie elam joins us.n the 911 call that led police to the convenience store where they confronted alton sterling. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. what we are learning from a source familiar with the investigation here is that it was a homeless man that made that 911 call into baton rouge police, saying there was a man brandishing a weapon. according to the source, they are also saying that the man was going after alton sterling, asking him for money and that alton sterling said something along the lines of leave me alone, i told you leave me alone and showed that he had a gun on him. that's when the homeless man then made that call that led to the police officers coming here. we know that the police have obtained his phone and they have also listened to that 911 call so a new development there. also, what we have tonight that's new are images of these two police officers. we can tell you salamoni has been on the force for four years, lane for three years. for the most part the department
