nbc's stephanie gosk is live for us tonight in athens. stephanie, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. well, weeks of political uncertainty are nearly over here in greece and its future in the eurozone is safe for now. the fear was that this election would spark the collapse of the eurozone so when greece voted crisis is averted. antonis samaras and his pro euro party eeked out a slim victory over an opposition that threatened to rip up a vital bailout plan. the next step? setting up a coalition in what he calls a salvation government. and greece needs saving. >> political uncertainty on top of financial uncertainty has basically brought commerce to a standstill. the only thing being bought or sold was food. with the government soon to be formed there is a hope it could kick-start the economy. there are small, positive signs says ionis kent his company the third largest hotel operator in the country. tourism across greece is down but today kent's last-minute bookings shot up 30%. new consumer confidence after the elections. >> t

we'll have more on the celebration later tonight, we do want to real quick check in with our own stephanie gosk in london for an update this evening. stephanie, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the palace announced prince philip had been taken to the hospital with a bladder infection. he is likely to stay there over the next few days. he was seen in public yesterday at the queen's side as part of the flotilla celebration. he looked good at one point even dancing. this is not his first health scare in recent months. he was taken to the hospital over christmas with chest pains and was treated for a clogged artery. he turns 91 this sunday. at that age any medical condition is going to be treated seriously. brian. >> stephanie, thanks. >> i know we will have more from you later in the broadcast. still ahead for us as we continue along the way, while it is sometimes hard to tell, it sure appeared the queen enjoyed that massive celebration. there was a lot to enjoy. and we'll show you all of it coming up later. >>> but first, maybe it is a sign that stopping mexican drug smugglers on l

our report from nbc's stephanie gosk. >> this is an unemployment agency in spain. 24% of the country is out of work. spain's banks may need more than $100 billion to stay afloat. the housing bubble burst, leaving them with heaps of bad loans. and then there's greece. that country goes bankrupt without another bailout. an election in nine days could put an agreed upon bailout plan in jeopardy. it may be tempting to see the economic hardship in europe and think, well, at least it isn't that bad in the u.s. but europe is the u.s.'s largest trading partner. if europeans don't have jobs, they don't have money to spend. >> it doesn't matter if it's apple, the greatest company in the world, if it's intel, it doesn't matter if it's general motors, if it's ford, it doesn't matter if it's mcdonald's. you're all going to suffer because you ain't going to sell the same level of goods in europe as you were doing two years ago. >> no one needs to explain that to drew greenblatt. his company makes industrial wire baskets used in factories worldwide. a $400,000 deal with a spanish company is on hold

we get more now from nbc's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: the queen has arrived. the british monarch took to the river today to celebrate 60 years on the throne. the entire family at her side, and the world watching. the royal barge, the spirit of chartwell, began a seven-mile pageant. 1,000 boats of all shapes and sizes at its side. manpowered and engine powered, a south pacific war canoe, a venetian gondola, and a floating belfry. as the procession wound its way past iconic london, the royal family, young and old, were at times visibly impressed by the historic show. when an orchestra starts up, first charles taps his sword. prince philip joins in. camilla takes their lead. and the family danced. this was a day to salute the queen, and a 1,000-year-old monarchy. the 21-gun salute from the tower of london. they called the river thames liquid history. well, today history is being made again. it was going to take a lot more than just lousy weather to keep these crowds from coming to see it for themselves. more than 1 million leaned over balconies, lined the river b

nbc's stephanie gosk is taking in the festivities at trafalgar square. what is the scene like where you are? >> well, meredith, the excitement is building here. the crowds have really been packing in in the last few hours. you know the mayor boris johnson came here and he was talking to me about what an incredible summer this is for london. one of the things he said that i found very interesting is that for a lot of people in the city and the country, that the diamond jubilee for them is an bigger than the olympics. and right now this crowd is anticipating the royal procession to pass by. it will pass by right in front of them. they're going to remove the barricades so people can continue up the road to buckingham palace. but they're not going to get a very good view. they've warned the crowds here that probably the best decision is to stay here and watch the big screen behind me. you know i heard you guys talking earlier about children here. apparently this is the place to bring your kids. lots of little girls on dad's shoulders. meredith? >> all right

stephanie gosk is in athens with this story. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann. another bullet dodged by greece and the eurozone. people in this country say they face a difficult choice in this election, not between good or bad but bad and worse. in the end by the slimmest of margins, greece sent a message to the world that it wants to stay in the euro.the euro. greece is not a big country but at the ballot box on sunday it had the weight of the world on its shoulders. at stake was the future of the euro currency and likely the entire global economy. when it was announced that antonis sa mar ras and his new democracy party eeked out a victory there was relief among some in athens and many around the world. >> let's hope that eurozone will steer nous a different way and they'll trust us more. >> reporter: sa mar ras supports the multibillion dollar bailout plan funded by europe even though the imposed austerity measures triggered a deep and painful depression here. the opposition vowed to rip up the agreement
