nbc's stephanie gosk now with the latest. >> reporter: the first images of matt lauer after being fired from his job at the "today" show, taken near his home on long island. early this morning the former star anchor released a statement saying in part, to the people i have hurt, i am truly sorry. some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized but there's enough truth in those stories to make me feel embarrassed or ashamed. it comes on the heels of new accusations. at least three women have come forward to nbc. among them one accuser who alleges she was sexually assaulted in lauer's office in 2001 according to a report in "the new york times." she told the paper she passed out during the incident and woke up on the floor of his office. she says lauer had his assistant take her to a nurse. an nbc spokesperson would not comment on the details citing privacy issues. altogether there may be as many as six accusers. questions have been raised about whether nbc news executives knew of the complaints prior to monday. several former nbc news executives we spoke with today told

a very sad day for me, as well as everyone else in this building. >> stephanie gosk, i've watched your coverage. you've been covering this story for every hour and you're crashing for "nightly." i appreciate that you jumped on with us. what about this "variety" story rings familiar to you? we've now heard these stories and it is a reckoning, as savannah guthrie described it this morning. it's a moment where the benefit of the doubt deserves to be held by all of the women and all the accusers. but what do you see in the account that has just dropped that is part of a familiar pattern of these men in power that get enshared by this me, too movement? >> there are a number of themes that stretch through these. what i find particularly striking and we saw this in hollywood and we heard about this with charlie rose at cbs, at fox news, at nbc, that there were people that were aware these things were going on. that this was kind of a part of the culture and everyone sort of rolled with it and thought it was okay. that they had heard rumors or they knew harvey weinstein was up to dirty tricks.

joining us now, stephanie gosk. unusual task -- >> to say the least. >> of reporting this out for the organization. what's today been like? >> incredibly strange. starts with gut punch and been very strange. typically a story you're close to, you remove yourself from it. i'm too close. can't do it. obviously can't do it here. important thing for me is to make sure i report it in the same way that i would report cbs story about charlie rose i reported on last week. it gets difficult because i'm in this building. some of the conversations i've had in this building have been on the record, things being shared publicly, obviously there are other conversations that i overhear amongst colleagues, things that are being said privately to each other that are things that typically a reporter might glob on to and want to report. i have to draw those lines by the nature of the fact i'm in this newsroom all day long. for instance, meeting held by noah oppenheim today to talk about all this. not public on the record meeting. i ch

i want to get more from nbc's stephanie gosk. >> hey, stephanie, good morning. in that statement from lawymatt lauer, he expressed his regret. on the heels of multiple new allegations. this morning, the national wreckening over sexual harassment in the workplace hit home. nbc news can report two additional women came forward accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior, after it was announced he was leaving the "today" show. a woman told the "new york times" anonymously she was sexually assaultled by the anchor in 2001 in his office. variety magazine published a report based on a two-month investigation, describing a pattern of alleged sexual misconduct by lauer. three unnamed women telling the magazine lauer sexually harassed them. their accounts corroborated by friends or colleagues. the magazine also reporting several women say they made complaints to nbc executives, which they allege fell on deaf ears. late wednesday night, nbc news responded in a statement. we can say unequivocally that prior to monday night, current nbc news management was never made awar

stephanie gosk with late details. >> reporter: devin kelley killed 26 people inside this church with semiautomatic rifle that by law he shouldn't have been allowed to buy. in 2012, just months after beating first wife and stepson at new mexico air force base holloman pt, kelley escaped from mental health facility. employee who followed kelley to bus station in el paso told police he was danger to himself and others, already caught sneaking firearms onto holloman air force base. and he was attempting to carry out death threats against his superior officers. the health worker tells nbc news that military examined computers and discovered that kelley was ordering weapons and tactical gear to a po box in san antonio. pleaded guilty to assault in to year in detention and discharge for bad conduct. air force says now that conviction never made it into the fbi's criminal database, something that would have prevented kelley from buying firearms. james mattis ordered independent investigation after air force announced its own review. >> checking all air force base databases to find out and co

i want to turn to stephanie gosk, who is our correspondent. ephanie, you're covering the latest allegations. please give us your report. >> good morning, guys. on top of the statement, there are also new allegations this morning against lauer, who has become one of the most high-profile cases of the sexual harassment firestorm engulfing this country. this morning, several more women leveled sexual misconduct allegations against matt lauer. nbc news can report two additional women came forward to the network after the news initially broke. >> we are devastated. >> a former employee told the "new york times" anonymously in 2001, she was sexually assaulted by the anchor in his office. "variety" published a report late wednesday, laying out a pattern of alleged misconduct. including exposing himself to an employee in his office. and inviting women employed by nbc to his hotel room late at night while covering the olympic games over the years. several women told "variety" they complained to executives at the network about lauer's behavior, which fel

let's bring in nbc's stephanie gosk. ore do we know about these latest allegations against matt lauer? >> sure. well, it's a little bit difficult to get an exact number, craig, because the women who have come forward are anonymous and there are multiple reports and we don't know any of those numbers -- any of those accusers mentioned are the same women. but there could be as many as eight. they are as follows. we have the woman who came forward monday night that precipitated matt lauer's firing. two others came forward after his firing to nbc. another two are mentioned in a "new york times" article. their stories corroborated by friends and colleagues. a further three in "variety" alleging sexual harassment and those according to the magazine, those accounts also corroborated by friends or colleagues. >> again, to be clear, could be as many as eight, but there may be some overlap here. >> it looks likely. that the two women who came forward to nbc after the announcement that lauer had been fired are the same two mentioned
