nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest from pennsylvania. porter: the trump campaign tells nbc news that they were told, in their words, in passing about an elevated threat towards the former president, but nothing about that threat coming from iran. even so, security around donald trump was ramped up even before he got here to that rally in pennsylvania. in the weeks leading up to donald trump's rally in pennsylvania, we're now learning there was already increased security around the former president after u.s. officials obtained intelligence that there may be an iranian plot to assassinate him. the national security council emphasizing there's no connection between the alleged iranian threat and saturday's shooting by gunman thomas crooks. >> we have people -- >> right there, right on the roof. >> reporter: from the republican convention, eric trump vented his frustration over the security operation at his father's rally. >> there was a breakdown, they better get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: according to multiple officials who have spo

back to you. >> stephanie gosk, thank you. joining us now is retired fbi agent bobby shacone.nforcement and rally-goers were aware of this suspicious person at various points before the shooting. shouldn't that have put secret service on higher alert? was there a communication breakdown? what's your view? >> yeah, i mean, that's what the internal investigation needs to address, right? what happened? you hear the woman on one of those videos imploring the officer, saying, "there's a guy on the roof!" some people even saw a gun. why there was not a more robust response, why officers saw him or saw him with a binocular or optics, we don't know. that has to come to light. this is very important. we are now, once these conventions are over, we are on the homestretch of a campaign where there will be more of these rallies. there will be more of these type of events. we need to make sure that the secret service is up to the task of keeping them safe. >> right. so much of the scrutiny has been about securing that building that the shooter scaled. here was secret service director kimbe

stephanie gosk joins us with more. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning.ally before he even got on that rooftop. the secret service says that that building falls outside of their security perimeter and was ultimately primarily the responsibility of local law enforcement. now, four officials tell nbc news that multiple rally goers noticed someone acting suspicious at metal detectors. a u.s. senior official now tells us that was thomas crooks and that local law enforcement pursued him. now, senior law enforcement officials also tell us that two local police officers found crooks on that rooftop, but were unable to stop him before he opened fire. meanwhile, the fbi investigation is going full tilt. they are working around the clock analyzing the electronic devices that thomas crooks owned, including his cell phone. they say so far, although they have gained access to it, it has not revealed any motive, but they continue to look. they also tell us that a dozen firearms were found in the search of the crook family home. hoda? >> all right, a lot of investigatin

nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest. >> reporter: grainy video shows the shooter, thomas crooks, moments before he fired a ar-style rifle at donald trump. he did not go unnoticed. >> he's on the roof! >> reporter: according to two senior officials, loke police officers saw crooks on the rooftop but couldn't stop him before he opened fire, injuring former president trump. 50-year-old corey comperatore was killed. david dutch and james copenhaver were critically wounded before a sniper shot and killed crooks. among the questions, how did the 20-year-old get on the rooftop, and why wasn't it better secured? he had a vantage point just 148 yards from the podium where trump was speaking. snipers took up positions nearby, but the secret service says the rooftop was outside their security perimeter. crooks' father has been cooperating with the investigation and legally purchased the rifle his son used. crooks purchased ammunition at this store near his home hours before the rally. senior officials say nearly a dozen firearms were found while searching the family's home. after the shooting, his

joining us now from paris with the latest, nbc news correspondent stephanie gosk.re, but aside from all the excitement, tell us about this rail disaster. paris without the -- well, france without the trains is really challenging. >> reporter: you're exactly right, and you know, you think about it, all of the security forces, all of the attention on paris on the olympics for the next couple of weeks and these attacks happened outside of the city, and these rail lines for people to really understand, they are crucial. they are the arteries of transportation in this country. it would be like dallas, chicago, and new york airports suddenly shutting down. that's how many people it would affected, and you have upwards of 800,000 people whose travel plans are affected, not just people coming for the olympic games but also just people traveling around the country. and according to two u.s. law enforcement officials who have spoken with french officials, they believe it was leftist radicals that staged this coordinated, what they call coordinated, premeditated attack. they
