stephanie there. we'll take you to the vatican where a transition of power continues. pope francis i meeting with cardinals just as critics have begun digging up concerns about the pope's past. nbc bay area's jay grayining us live from vatican city with the latest for us. hi, jay. >> reporter: hi, there. good evening. the first full day for the pope as the leader of more than 1 billion catholics around the world. their questions as you talk at the future of the church and about his past. applause echoed through the vatican this morning as pope francis gathered with the catholic cardinals, those who elected him and others past the age of 80 not eligible for a vote. he spoke briefly in italian and knowing the age of the men assembled said, quote, let us give this wisdom to young people, like good wine, it becomes better with age. let us give to young people the wisdom of life. after his remarks francis enthusiastically greeted each of the cardinals, some sharing gifts with the new pontiff. >> just a holy, loving gentleman and i was -- i think we are grateful to have him. >> reporter: also on friday the seal was broken on the apartment of pope francis opening the door to his new home and some say the
