i'm stephanie ruhle.just moments away from the kickoff of the final day of confirmation hearings for supreme court nominee kavanaugh. it is a big one. let's go straight to capitol hill where msnbc's garrett haake is standing by. help me through a koefcontrover i don't get. surrounding democratic senator booker releasing documents that some said were confidential. they ended up not being. what happened? >> here's the short version. coming into these hearings, a bunch of documents related to cavanaugh's work back in the bush administration were committee confidential. senators were allowed to look at them, know about them but they weren't allowed to talk about them in the hearing unless they had gotten them precleared beforehand. democratic senators thought this was a terrible idea. they thought this was a sham rule. on the first night of the hearings, cory booker read from one of those e-mails and just by doing so broke senate rules. what we saw yesterday, this book and forth between primarily booker and j

i'm stephanie ruhle. we're watching hurricane florence as it is closing in on the coast. the dangerous category 2 storm is slowing down but growing in size which could mean days, days of life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic flooding and destructive winds. we've got an incredible team of reporters deployed across the region as the outer bands of the storm begin reaching the carolina coast. first, let's get you caught up on what the serious storm is doing. florence, now a category 2 hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour. parts of the carolina coast bracing for conditions that could last, this is very important, 24 hours or longer. that's a lot of water. the storm is forecast to bring up to 25 inches of rain. some areas could see as much as 40 inches of rainfall triggering catastrophic flash flooding. north carolina's governor is urging people to get out of harm's way while they still can. >> there is still time to leave. the winds may be down a bit. but the one-two intense p

we moved a little further west from where we were at with stephanie ruhle. this is ocean crest pier. the waves and wind behind me are starting to pick up. this is an hour from north myrtle beach. it is a barrier island extremely vulnerable to the storm because you have the ocean to the south. you have the waterway to the north. and you also have the cape view river to the east. i want you to look at the scene behind me. this looks like a regular morning on the beach. you have at least ten surfers out there. you have families. you have onlookers, tourists. this is not the scene that authorities want to be looking at hours before this storm hits. and from what i've gathered with my conversations with locals, because the storm got slightly downgraded to a category 2, that gives people a false sense of security, again, in the critical hours where they're going to be making these decisions of whether to leave or whether to stay. and, as michelle was explaining to us, it is not the category of the storm that makes it so dangerous. it is the storm surge that could
