i am chris jansing in for stephanie ruhle. it is thursday, august 29th. here's what's happening. hurricane dorian is growing stronger by the hour. now expected to explode into a monster category 3 storm sometime tomorrow. by labor day, it's expected to slam into the state of florida with winds of 125 miles per hour or worse. and while southern florida is well acquainted with these big storms, the part of north central florida currently in dorian's cross hairs has never been hit with a category 3 hurricane despite records going back nearly 170 years. we'll go to cape canaveral and the weather center. the entire state of florida is pretty much inside the cone here. tell me what's going on there. >> reporter: chris, good morning to you. that's right. the governor of florida has declared a state of emergency in 26 counties and asked folks to stock up on supplies that will last about seven days. folks are listening to that warning. yesterday we saw folks heading to the grocery store as they're stocking up on extra food and water. also hardware stores seeing their shelves cleared out.

stephanie ruhle picks up the coverage right now. >>> thanks so much. we start with breaking news out of hong kong where thousands of protesters have packed the main airport forcing officials there to cancel all departing flights for a second straight day and adding to the tensions surrounding months of pro democracy demonstrations. we'll go to the airport. what is going on? >> reporter: well, there are no flights going out. there are very few flights being allowed to land. 200 flights were canceled yesterday. this is one of the world's busiest transport hubs and it has come to a standstill because authorities are telling people to just avoid it. there are thousands of protesters here. we are on the departures deck. they are filling the arrival area as well. the crowds are starting to grow more restless. there's been more chanting in the last few minutes. among all of these thousands of protesters are also a lot of stranded passengers wandering around wondering what they are supposed to do. they have no information on when their flights are going to go.

stephanie ruhle joins me now. she covers business for us as well as hosting 16 shows here on msnbc. which tariffs are delayed? why the delay? >> okay. so the president likes to say he's mr. market, he also calls himself the tariff man. today, mr. market won out because the president is sort of in a box. yesterday the market was down 400 points. over the last week we have heard from the ceo of goldman sachs, the analysts at morgan stanley, at bank america warning that the trade war will tip us into recession. the president's got to do something about that, so what's the only lever can he pull? pull these tariffs. and why? because remember, tariffs are a tax. so in this case, it's consumer goods. it's some clothing, some shoes, some laptops, some cell phones, some video game consoles. and until now, a lot of consumers have talked about the tariffs but they haven't felt them. it's back to school. when i go to target in two weeks and i have to buy my kids clothing and sneakers and maybe a laptop, if suddenly it's a lot more expensive because that's what happens, it gets passed on to the
