i am stephanie ruhle. it is thursday, february 27th. there's a ton going on today and we're going to start with breaking news. worries about spread of coronavirus are growing as a new case is identified in california, this one with no apparent connection to a foreign country. the cdc says it is not clear when or where this person got sick, in their words, quote, it's possible this could be an instance of community spread of the virus which would be the first time it happened in the united states. nbc's steve patterson is in los angeles. steve, what more can you tell us? >> reporter: this is troubling for a few reasons, most have to do with the phrase you said, community spread, meaning a virus spreading through a community and source of infection is unknown. this is also a case where essentially the first case in the united states where the person has no known risk factors, never traveled to asia or any relevant country with a history of infection, doesn't know anyone who did, doesn't know anyone else who is infected. we know this is a

joining me now from the new york stock exchange is stephanie ruhle. also here white house reporter jonathan lamier. what's happening with the markets? >> remember from the markets' perspective, people aren't overly political. they're risk managers. whether you are the ceo, investor or even a mom like you and me, it's about understanding risk and managing. the information that's available to investors has been from the chinese government, untrustworthy, and from the u.s. government, at best questionable this week. think about the information we've got from the white house and cdc. you were just talking about it. it's unclear. there aren't investors who are saying this is a doomsday. they're saying, we just don't know what the picture holds, and where they're most concerned honestly is around consumer spending. we have all covered this administration for the last few years, and the president talks all about the blue-collar boom and manufacturing boom. this isn't one. wlaz driven the economy is consumer spending. i'm talking individuals, governments, bus

stephanie ruhle is seeing if these commercials can be a game changer or not. >> reporter: sunday's super the chiefs and president trump against michael bloomberg. both men shelling out $10 million each for ads that will air during the big game. >> how big of a deal is that? >> it's a big deal. we have not seen presidential ads in the super bowl ever. this is unprecedented. >> reporter: super bowl ads are pricey, but they just might be worth the investment. >> we have a president who is under siege from all sides and you've got mike bloomberg who is a candidate that joined the race late and has a lot of work to do in terms of catching up and there's no better place to raise awareness than here. >> but making an ad that resonates is not easy. just ask jason. he's overseeing some of the most memorable super bowl commercials. >> i don't know if super bowl ads are intended to change people's minds and i don't think that that is probably the right course to take if you're a brand or a politician. it's about entertaining people. if you entertain people well, maybe you could change their mind. >
