i am stephanie ruhle. it is thursday, march 5th. >>> new cases, new fears, a new step from lawmakers as the country continues to fight spread of coronavirus this morning. late last night, the governor of california declaring a state of emergency as new cases emerge in the state. two of those cases linked to this cruise ship held off the coast of san francisco while passengers get tested. 21 of 2500 on board are showing signs of the virus. the first death in california now confirmed, while the death toll in washington state hit ten. there are now 11 cases in new york state, yesterday, new jersey announced its first presumptive case, bringing the total number of states with active cases to 17. at this hour, school districts, hospitals, and now congress doing all they can to address spread of the virus, and fears that come with it. the house yesterday passing an $8 billion emergency funding package to help fight the virus. the senate is set to vote on the bill later today, this as two of the hardest-hit state

i'm stephanie ruhle. it is thursday, march 26th. we start with breaking news.a heartbreaking new milestone as america struggles with the coronavirus pandemic. the number of deaths in this country has now surpassed 1,000. at the same time there are more than 68,000 reported cases, up roughly nearly 750% from one week ago. that's the physical toll. this morning we got our first concrete evidence of the economic toll this is taking on american businesses and american workers. let me tell you, it is stunning. in the week ending march 21st, americans filed a record-breaking nearly 3.3 million unemployment claims. let's put that in perspective. that is, by far, the highest number we've ever seen. nearly five times the previous record set back in 1982 when it was just under 700,000. but this morning, the fed chairman jerome powell gave a very rare interview on the "today" show and said he expects the economy to recover quickly. >> at a certain point, we will get the spread of the virus under control, and at that time, confidence will return, businesses will open again

let's get right to stephanie ruhle, she's on the floor of the stock exchange. this morning, steph, trading halted at one point. i understand that it has since resumed. where do things stand right now? >> listen, things don't look good where we are but remember we've got to look big picture, especially for people at home. the president's former economic adviser gary cohn talking about lack of information and lack of communication being historic. if, however, that starts to get cleaned up and it's got to start at the top from the president and we don't see that happening, if that were to change fundamentally there are a lot of good things in the economy. think about this, craig. on friday we got an extraordinary jobs number. we saw unemployment hitting record lows. now, those are backward looking numbers but they're very strong. now here we are with an oil price war with the president who continues to not be open and honest with the american people about what the spread really looks like and at the end of the day, containment and mitigation are within our reach.

i'm stephanie ruhle. it is tuesday, march 31st, the last day of the month. here's what's happening. today is the day that millions of americans have been dreading ever since the coronavirus pulled the economic rug out from under them. that is because tomorrow is the 1st. the day rent is due, property taxes are due. all those bills that people no longer have the money to pay. that is because the government has rightly put our health first. of course, the big picture is still the health crisis. and as of this morning, there are more than 163,000 known cases in america. 20,000 more than yesterday. more than 3,000 people have died. that is roughly 500 more than yesterday, making monday the deadliest day so far. doctors and nurses are struggling to contain the death toll. congress and the administration have been running a victory lap over that $2.2 trillion stimulus emergency economic aid bill designed to help struggling americans and businesses. but we still don't know exactly how those americans are going t
