nbc's stephanie stanton is in los angeles. okay, you see some really unusual things in the los angeles streets, but you usually don't see a space shuttle. >> reporter: yeah. typically not. this has been an incredible sight today. folks came out to essentially witness history. i am at the pit stop area. the first pit stop area. the shuttle has since moved on. let's take a live look at where it is right now. it's at the next stop, expected to be there for about six hours. now, you know, the city of los angeles has literally rolled out the steel carpet for the shuttle. they've laid down some 9,000 pounds of steel to reinforce the streets to handle the weight of this shuttle. the city has been planning this event for about a year. they've had to cut down several trees, remove a bunch of streetlights, all for "endeavour's" final mission. "endeavour" made its first stop about three and a half miles into the 12-mile journey to its final resting place at the california signs center. officials calling it a logistical pit stop. >> this

stephanie stanton talked to the experts about how they're going to move the giant shuttle through thef los angeles. >> reporter: the shuttle "endeavour" departed l.a.x. on its 200,000-pound transport vehicle and began rolling around 2:00 a.m. >> 80 wheels, and each wheel can move independently, but they're all computer controlled. >> reporter: spectators lined the streets for a chance to witness history. >> it's just the american dream. it's an american icon. it's an american hero. >> and liftoff. >> reporter: after 25 missions and millions of miles in space, "endeavour" will soon call the california science center home. captain mark kelly served as commander of "endeavour's" final space mission and said fans will get an extra treat when visiting the shuttle. >> they'll try to display it in the vertical with an external tank and rocket boosters like it's on the launchpad. >> reporter: but the "endeavour" must make the painstaking 12-mile journey to downtown l.a. dubbed mission 26, with top speeds of just 2 miles an hour, the shuttle will be just inches away from buildings at some poin

nbc's stephanie stanton has more on the shuttle's slow speed journey. >> reporter: thousands of fans lined the streets for the slow crawl through the streets of l.a. at top speeds of just 2 miles an hour, officials navigated the 170,000-pound shuttle through the city carefully avoiding trees, street lights and even coming within inches of some buildings. >> i just want why did you want see it? >> it's big and really big. >> really huge. this is in space and now it's in our city. >> reporter: engineers were faced with one of the most difficult maneuvers get getting endeavor across the 405 freeway midway through the journey. the shuttle made a stop in the sid of inglewood for a special ceremony. >> "endeavour" is a true national treasure and i'm extremely pleased to welcome it to the new home right here in southern california. >> reporter: after a delay due to maintenance on the transporter and maneuvering challenges, fans were treated to a special musical performance arranged by famed choreographer debbie allen. i'm stephanie stanton. back to you guys. >> thanks so much. >>> back here at home san francisco firefighters are trying to determine what caused a massive four-alarm fire that gutted several popular businesses and brought traffic to a crawl. the squat and gobble restaurant in the west portal neighborhood caught fire this morning. firefighters say it spread to a wine shop and dental office. crews brought in so much heavy equipment that muni trains could not pass through the west portal station for five hours. bus bridges were set up to get around the tunnel. three firefighters were hurt including one who suffered smoke inhalation. >>> live ammunition made fighting a house fire a little more challenging for a san jose firefighter this morning. the fire started just before 4:00 at a home on carlton avenue. that's near good sam hospital. the intense heat set off the bullets causing them to explode. the couple that was inside the home was able to escape but are being treated for burns. investigators are still tr
