i'm stephanie sy.the sunrises on the west coast this morning, people are getting a first look at the damage. california's raging wildfires caused overnight. 23,000 people slept in emergency shelters last night. more than 700 homes are destroyed. three major sfiers are tearing through residential areas to the north and east of san francisco, at a pace firefighters say they have never seen before. melissa chan is live in middletown, california right now. a town the valley fire turned through over the weekend, and we can see what that looks like behind you, melissa. >> reporter: absolutely. this is just one of the many homes destroyed by the fire that went through middletown, as i would say that our team feels that about a third to half of the homes in middletown have been destroyed and look just like this. all of this rubble. all that really remains, large metal frames, stoves, ovens are remainders of that. we decided to go to one of the evacuation centers and get a sense of how residents are responding

i'm stephanie sy.gress today is set to debate the iran nuclear deal as house republicans make last stitch effort to derail it. they say they can't vote on the deal until the white house reveals the so-called side deals. libby casey is live in washington. we just heard the senate will vote today. what impact will that have? >> reporter: well, the first step stephanie is whether or not they can get past the democrat filibuster. republicans will invoke cloture that means they can bring the bill forward and get it going. democrats have enough votes to block it. the wild-card is will all 42 of those democrats indeed vote to filibuster? will they block this from moving forward. democratic leaders admitted they weren't entirely sure. because some may believe in letting this issue breathe and letting everyone vote on it. what democratic leaders want to do instead of having to use this procedural motion to stop things, and they just one vote up or down, but they want it to take 60 votes to formally disapprove.

i'm stephanie sy.ush and pull of migrants after accepting thousands in recent days an overwhelming croatia is now bussing migrants back to the hungary border where authorities have been seen letting small groups pass back on to the hungarian side. this are live pictures from the border. the huge influx of refugees has jammed border crossings. now croatia has closed all but one of its border crossings as well. lawrence lee has more. >> reporter: what has become clear as today has gone on is this clarification again from the position of the croatian government who had said they would let everybody in as long as they wanted to go out the other side. then they said they couldn't cope and might have to start closing the borders, but the prime minister said again today that they insist they don't want the razor wire solution that hungary opened, but they will let people through as long as they don't want to stay here. that is obviously better than the alternative. what happened today is the refugee route fro

i'm stephanie sy. thousands of firefighters this morning are confronting two of california's fastest burning fires in decades. the valley and butte fires have together consumed 115,000-acres, roughly the size of new orleans. now officials confirm at least one person has been killed. more than 4,000 firefighters have been battling the bout fire which is 25% contained. the valley fire began away winds are fanning the flames. we have a report from the valley fire. tell us what is behind you and is that a scene you are seeing a lot? >> this rapid fire spreads through town with the winds. i don't know how clearly you can see, but this is just the foundation of the home. you can see what was once the kitchen. we see charred oven and stove and charred washer and dryer, as well. further behind me is a completely destroyed vehicle. we are seeing homes like this in middletown, but what is interesting is that parts of the town appeared fine. it looked like the fire did not get to it. we are not sure whether it wa

i'm stephanie sy. hungarian riot police are spraying refugees with water cannons at this hour.housands of migrants were trying to break the fence police say. these are live shots. you can still see the water cannons there. our mohammed jamjoom also there. he spoke to us over the phone a short time ago. >> it's complicated right now since the border has been shut down. we're in essentially a no man's land. and we're on a stretch of the motorway that has been closed off where there are now dozens of tents, people sleeping on the road, there are hundreds of refugees. in fact there are at least two helicopters. the crowds around us are -- are cheering because they are continuing to protest the fact that they say they are detained here in serbia, and they should be let into hungary. that all being said, though, the hungarians standing firm on their pledge not to allow refugees into hungary. they have now criminalized crossing illegally into hungary, and we suspect that is the reason why they deployed the water cannons. where we are, there is at least one water cannon. it has not bee

i'm stephanie sy. debate is underway in the house of representatives right now over the iran nucle nuclear -- deal. senate democrats blocked a resolution rejecting the deal, but the g.o.p. says it will bring it up again. and some in the house vow they will do everything they can to stop the agreement, even threatening a lawsuit. libby casey is live on capitol hill. what bills are the house debating right now? >> reporter: in about an hour they will take two votes. one is to approve of the iran nuclear deal. now that will fail, because all of the republicans and some democrats will vote against it. but republicans want to put the democrats backing the white house on defense. basically use this as a moment to say that these m dls stood up and supported this deal, that a lot of americans have questions about, stephanie. they have also chosen this day september 11th, with particular intention, because it is of course the 14th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. they will take another vote as well, t

i'm stephanie sy. eight were killed when heavy rain hit that town. we have the latest. >> much of the heavy rain fell the mountain town surrounding the small town of hilldale. forecasters say the steep terrain and poor drainage in the area contributed to the flood danger. there were women and children in this silver car when the water started to rise. rescuers were able to get each one of them to safety, but people in two other vehicles swept away in the town of hilldale would not be so lucky. police say heavy rains late monday afternoon caused the flash flooding that carried away a van and an s.u.v. full of women and children several hundred yards downstream. rescuers called off the search for survivors late monday at conditions became too dangerous. the national weather service issued a flash flood warning earlier in the day for the area, but a significant segment of the 7700 town residents may not have gotten the warning. hilldale is the home base of the warren jeff polygamy sect. he is in prison and members of the sect are discouraged from having

i'm stephanie sy. tens of thousands of refugees looking to start over in europe have more options this morning, but many are still struggling to make their way. we are getting live pictures on the serbian-hungarian border. you can see hundreds of families walking through fields to get to hungary's border. you can see them, small children, carrying their backpacks. they have probably walked for hundreds of miles, and this is what is happening right now on the serbian, hungarian border. we have also seen clashes in some cases, between refugees trying to reach hungary, an e.u. country, and police. this is earlier, about an hour ago, we started seeing these pictures, people running through the corn fields, and you can see the men in blue uniforms. those are security forces that the hungarian government has sent to the border of serbia and hungary. they are also building a fence to try and block these refugees from transiting through hungary. now just a short time ago, as we mentioned, germany announced it

i'm stephanie sy. this morning, determined refugees and migrants are sashing out a new route through europe just a short timing a buses carrying refugees from serbia crossed over into croatia. they are seeking alternatives after hungary sealed its borders. austria is placing extra controls on its borders with hungary. >> a very sad scene here on this motorway, a no man's land between serbia and hungary. that gate behind us in the distance has been erected by the hungarian authorities. they are no longer letting reef gees into hungary. that border has been sealed. there are dozens of tents set up here and dozens of refugees are desperate and very afraid. they don't know what they are going to do next. many i've spoken with in the past few hours of from syria and iraq. just a few moments ago, i was at the gate. there was a crush of people demanding authorities let them in. one mother had her baby in her arms and she was pleading with the hungary's authorities to please let them in. she said her daughter

i'm stephanie sy. >> congress today is set to debate the iran nuke deem as house republicans make a last ditch effort to derail it, saying they can't vote on the deal until the white house reveals the so-called side agreements that iran negotiate with atomic inspectors. the clock is ticking on a vote which could still happen this week. libby casey is live this morning in washington. good morning, tell us more about what republicans are trying to do to send the deal off track. >> good morning. house republicans have changed their strategy really at the last minute. the plan has been all along to take a vote, disapproving of the iran deal and really, the house does have the votes. republicans are behind it and some democrats are, as well. that's on hold. now republicans want to take a series of three votes. number one, they want to vote to approve of the deal. they feel like that will put democrats on the defense. number two, they want to prevent the white house from lifting any sanctions and number three, they basically want to criticize the white house for what they're calling side deals
