al jazeera america. >> >>> this is "talk to al jazeera" with me, stephanie sy. speaking this week with natalie merchant. you are also sort of really involved in community activism. i know that you've been involved in the new york state anti fracking movement. that? >> i was asked to come to binghamton to perform a benefit for an ithaca-based organization because the counties around ithaca, about 80% of four of those counties had been leased over a 20-year period to the gas industry. people woke up realising that if fracking is allowed in new york state we might be looking at 40 to 80,000 fracking wells. we were also waking up to the nightmare in pennsylvania of water contamination. i went to binghamton. i had been reading about fracking, didn't understand it, didn't understand the potential impacts at the time and my eyes were opened. i met this family from pennsylvania who had a jug of contaminated water from their well and between the methane migration and the introduction of the chemicals in the fracking process, they were saying the water in our town has bee

i'm stephanie sy. authorities this morning are piecing together clues, trying to find a motive behind a shooting spree in kalamazoo, michigan. jason dalton shot eight people saturday night, first at an apartment complex, then a car dearly ship and later eight restaurant parking lot. six people shot died. two others are in critical condition. al jazeera's andy has been following this story for us. police believe the suspect chose his shooting victims at random. that's the word they are using. where does the investigation stand right now? >> it's just a big question why, that everybody wants to find out. it looks like the only person who can answer that is the suspect. jason dalton sitting in jail now and probably with a court appearance this afternoon, the big question of why hung over a prayer vigil held last night in kalamazoo at a church. hundreds of people showed up. they played amazing grace and remembered the eight victims. they are trying to make sense of something seemingly so senseless. >> shot

i'm stephanie sy. in about an hour, president obama will make his case for closing the guantanamo bay detention center. that ho long been a promise made during his first campaign eight years ago. the plan presented to congress today will likely call for transferring some detainees to u.s. soil, sure to provoke a fight with lawmakers who oppose that move. some lawmakers are already speaking out against the plan. they did so yesterday. how difficult will it be for the administration to convince congress? >> almost impossible. the obama administration says it's going to try. they say look, congress asked for this plan, and so they're submitting it on the deadline that it's supposed to be submitted. they hope it will start a conversation about whether or not there's a way to bring some of the detainees at guantanamo who can't be tried and can't be transferred to other countries to the united states so that they can close guantanamo, which the obama administration continues to say is a recruiting tool for e
