joining me on the phone is stephen cook. he is eastern studies. mr. cook, we have talked about this before and turkey has aa lot of ways and a will the of potential suspects of terror groups and we talked about pkk and the curds and evan just making the case and it's hard to believe that the curd would target an international terminal. what's the assessment? >> well, i think that's right. i think that it's right there there are multiple suspects in this. there's a possibility of a kurtish group whether it's the pkk or workers party or something called the kurtish freedom and it's true that they would not have interest in necessarily targeting the foreigners. there's an access point into the international terminal in istanbul from the arrives hall. there you don't have to go through layers of security to stand and wait for people. there are elevators up to the other level. there's a possibility that they gained access and targeted tourists watching for the arrivals in the international arrivals area. with all of the uncertainty we need to take the poss

reaction now from stephen cook from the council on foreign relations and joins us right now on the phone, obviously still very early but what can you tell us about what you have heard so far? >> well, it seems two things are clear. one, turkish security worked pretty well as your lead-in suggested that these bombers were forced to take action before they got through the initial screening. and which would mean before they got into the departure hall so as many casualties as there are, might have been many more if they got into the actual arrivals hall like in brussels. the second thing is it strikes me as like brussels to be something that's inspired by or linked to the islamic state. the turks are, of course, battling the pkk, kurdistan workers party and an offshoot and attacked turkey in the course of the last year and has the hallmarks of an islamic state attack. >> why there? why today do you think? >> it's unclear why today. of course. but i think airports have become yet again targets of terrorists. even as hardened as the istanbul airport is, this is the main airport like jfk in ne
