scarlet: i want to bring stephen dennis -- denis into the conversation. a couple people pointed out that the senate democrats that have been all but silent in this of course, could stymie the bill -- explain how that would work. stephen; the amendment on previous and conditions that put the bill over the top in the house, they are not even sure in the senate if it complies with the bird role, so it could be stricken as soon as it gets over your bed on top of that, it is not clear that the provision has anything close to 50 votes anyway. steven: well end up happening in the senate, according to senators i spoke with, they will craft an entirely new bill. it might take pieces of the house bill, but they do not want to own the house bill. it polls terribly. they want something that is their own and crafted so that -- craft it so they can give everybody ownership over here. they can only lose to republican senators. it is a tight majority. they will not get any democrats. and they have many who are unhappy about how the house bill was crafted. there are medica

stephen dennis has a piece today going through some of these cuts , particularly in programs targetingfortunate. welcome to the program, stephen, good to have you here. give us an overview of the major cuts to the programs directed to the less fortunate. obviousthe one that's is food stamps. we have 40 million people on food stamps right now. the republicans have in trying to, especially conservative republicans, haven't tried to cut that program for a number of years, constraining it and making it hard. they want to have work requirements and stiffen the work requirements. that would cut maybe 25% of the cost over the next 10 years. that's $200 billion in that program alone. with additional cuts to medicaid, that's something that has been out for the last few months as the republicans have pushed their health care bill through the house, barely. those things while have a hard time passing in the senate. this is a request or suggestion for the president, it doesn't have much binding effect. food stamps ito thought a lot of the agricultural lobby was involved but a lot of that money goe
