stephen hahn. >> you can use saliva rather than a swab in the nose.s more comfortable for the patient and can be repeated several times and it's safer for the healthcare provider in terms of collection. this is not an at-home test. it has to be performed with a provider. but it provides great advantages moving forward. lou: joining us is dr. ian lipkin, the director for infection and immunity at columbia university. he's researching the use of blood plasma drawn from patients who have successfully recovered from the virus. the doctor tested positive for the virus in the past month. it's great to the have you with us. i want to get to the news of this -- great to have a new test that is as simple as this one sounds. a spit test, if you will, that is not intrusive, is speedy, and every bit as accurate as other tests out there. >> it will be more convenient and less instraysive. i don't know if it's as sensitive as the nasofir nays nl swabs. it's not revolutionary but we'll have to see how sit performs. lou: that seems to be the case with just about ever

stephen hahn now to tell us more. good morning. americans are sitting at home now and they're wondering two things -- when can i get back to work, and can i do it safely. this at-home test, tell us about it. where does it fit into the bigger puzzle of testing which seems so important to doing those two things -- return to normalcy, returning to the economy, working as usual. >> good morning. thank you for having me. so this new test is an at-home collection test for diagnostic. that is a test that would diagnose the presence of the covid-19 virus. this is a test where it's going to focus lab corps, the company that's developed this, is going to focus first on frontline health care workers and first responders. those with symptoms can go on line and fill out a questionnaire. the questionnaire will be reviewed by a health care professional, a licensed physician, and if appropriate and consistent with the cdc guidelines, a package will be sent overnight with a swab and a tube. it's very easy and safe to perform. our data show that it'

stephen hahn and everybody else. so it was just one of those moments where i saw this collision of, you know, this politics and science really happen. >> i wanted to ask you also, the fda warned today of serious side effects associated with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. what does it takes for the fda to issue a warning like that and what's your reaction to that? >> yeah, no, it was pretty significant. the language was specifically, you know, there's no evidence that this works, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, in the treatment of covid, and there may be significant side effects. it's a significant warning, jake. i guess maybe it goes without saying, maybe even more of a significant warning right now, because obviously there's been a lot of enthusiasm from the white house around these medications. so for the fda to say this, in this environment, i think is very significant. it does sort of follow a lot of what we've been hearing from other countries including brazil, sweden, and france. these are all small st

stephen hahn running the cancer center before this. really, really renowned scientists.ometimes they're not speaking as forcefully as they probably should, but i also, you know, take some sal ace in the fact that they're in the job and they want to stay in the job because this is really important right now. i mean, there are six significant vaccine trials that are happening. one of them we just reported on. many therapeutic trials. some of them have not shown promising results yet. but one of those clicks, that could be a way out of this mess. we need these scientists to be in these jobs. hopefully they didn't get too sidetracked by all of this. i'm sure the people working in the labs hopefully kept working in the labs on the work that they have to do, but it is a huge distraction. i mean, the number of texts that i got from people, my sources today, about this issue. i'm asking about medications. i'm asking about whether mrna is going to be a good vaccine candidate or not and we're talking about lysol. i mean, that is not, you know, i guess maybe we should stop talking

stephen hahn joins us now. good morning, dr. hahn. i want to start with the latest models, which projects that the u.s. peak in terms of daily deaths would likely be today. hitting the top of curve and then starting to come down. have we peaked and does this mean the worst may have passed? >> martha, thank you for having me on the show. so, the models do show that we are very close to the peak and so i think that information is accurate. this has been a very fast-moving outbreak and so we really have to take this day by day. we have some of the best experts in the world, dr. fauci and dr. birx on this. i think that information is accurate, but again, we have to take day by day. as the data comes in. this has to be a data-driven approach. >> of course the president initially set today as a target date for reopening the country. he backed off of that. but there are new warning signs about opening the country by may 1st. "the new york times" obtained new federal projections showing a spike in infections if restrictions are lifted. predic
