stephen hahn says he's never been asked to make a decision based on politics and that the decisions at the fda are based solely on data, but some are questioning the move. >> this was surprising to a lot of people. just a couple, three days ago on the fda's website itself, it said there was not enough evidence to support an emergency use authorization. that was just, you know, a couple of days ago. it's not clear at all that there was any more data presented. i've gone through their memorandum, decision memorandum, and i don't see any new data being presented, so i know that coronavirus task force members did not get any new data, so it's really unclear to me what exactly happened here. >> other medical experts are also weighing in, echoing dr. sanjay gupta's findings that there is still not enough data to know how effective convalescent plasma is. one vaccine expert says he believes the white house may have bullied the fda into giving emergency use authorization. >> you have to prove that the plasma made a difference, and all the data so far really haven't done that. and that's why it

and i want to quote the fda commissioner stephen hahn, it's promising efficacy, and the data suggeststhat level of caution is appropriate. actually this emergency use authorization will make it easier for people to actually get plasma. we don't know how well it works still, and it will make it more difficult to recruit patients into the trials that are ongoing that would give it a rigorous evaluation. the fda has done this before. they did an emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine. they were all enthusiastic about it and then had to withdraw it when it was found not to work. i hope that doesn't happen here. as i say, my heart hopes that this will work out. but we're not clear about how well it works, in which patients, and what the dose is. a rigorous trial would tell us that. jon: but given the history of the use of convalescent plasma for treating other diseases, i gather scarlet fever is one of them, does it not -- i mean, basically i'm saying is it not worth the try? isn't it worth, you know, putting it into practice? >> we don't do things on the basis of gee, i think
