stephen, why don't you start. >> well, the last order was general lee's plan to capture harper's ferry which was 12,000 men and a good deal of armament. and so he -- this was in frederick. and on september 9th he writes out orders to divide up his army into four segments. stonewall jackson was going to go to the west and completely surround harper's ferry. and he sent these out by courier to all the general involved. and the copy that went to stonewall jackson, jackson read it and then copied it again for d.h. hill who had been under his orders. one of the couriers was also taking the same message to d.h. hill and, of course, it never arrived, and it was drop inside a clover field south of frederick. and when -- we don't know why this happened or how it could have been prevented or at least discovered because the courier was supposed to deliver the envelope in which the message came with the signature that went back to the headquarters, but it did not go. my own theory is that it was a careless courier, and then he discovered he'd lost it, went to d.h. hill's headquarters and asked around and said, oh, yes, we h
