joce sterman explains how the close call should be a lesson for you. >> reporter: the notices were hard to ignore claiming you won more than $3 million. and marylanders who got them just had to send back 20 bucks to claim their fortune. >> we tell people is you shouldn't be making any payments to claim a prize. that's illegal. >> reporter: that's why phil with the maryland attorney general's office went after the las vegas company that scamed more than 700 marylanders with this scheme. >> this was a victory for consumers. the company is no longer doing tbhis maryland. >>reporter: the company which- - doing business in maryland. >> reporter: they sent out official looking paperwork like this claiming to be part of the state of maryland commissioners of registration an agency that doesn't exist. the ag's office won the case back in 2010 find the company 25 grand and recently got refunds for everyone here who sent a payment for the bogus prize. it's a win against the company but the attorney general's office says this lottery scam is not unique. you may get a phone call or mailer or e-mail
