you are -- you're familiar with the steubenville rape case.an the attorney general call the grand jury, and would that necessarily mean charges for more people? >> oh, it definitely could mean charges for more people. in fact, there could be other students, other juveniles involved, but also there's the possibility that the parents of the defendants engaged in some kind of a cover-up or friends engaged in a cover-up. now, we don't know whether those specific accusations would be made, but those would be the kinds of things that a grand jury would be investigating, so there could be additional charges coming down the road if the evidence is there. >> paul, what would a grand jury do that a solo judge couldn't do? >> well, the grand jury has broad powers. they can issue subpoenas. they can compel individuals to testify. a judge can't do that. a judge can only hear the testimony of the case in front of him. a grand jury has wide-reaching powers to bring in evidence and force testimony from those who don't want to cooperate. >> is this process ove

now a crime and justice story in a small town like steubenville isn't usually the makings of national news and the alleged events on the night in question are sadly not remarkable for their rarity. we know that one in six american women is a survivor of an attempted or completed sexual assault. and we know 44% of survivors are under the age of 18. but thanks to an unusual aspect of this case, we all know now in graphic detail some of what happened in steubenville on august 11th, 2012. the defendants and witnesses to the alleged crime documented their actions on social media. although the trial just began on wednesday, this case has already been tried in the court of public opinion with posts to twitter, youtube and instagram standing in evidence. there's also the supremesy of football in a struggling town where the high school team is in the spotlight. and then there's the question of consent. whether an incapacitated girl still maintains the capacity to be a willing participant in a sex act. the case was amplified by a crime blogger who collected and posted the tweets and then instag

abc's alex perez joins us from steubenville with the latest.ood morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning, bianna. prosecutors called more than 20 witnesses already, including a number of teenagers who were around the night of the alleged incident. >> please rise. >> reporter: nearly 12 hours of testimony in court friday including from a fellow big red football player who admitted to using his iphone to record video of the 16-year-old girl during parts of the alleged sexual assault and then deleting the video the following day. "it was one of those moments you realize you did something wrong and stupid," he said on the witness stand, "so i deleted it." trent mayes and malik richmond are charged with sexually assaulting the girl after a night of wild partying last august. prosecutors argue the girl was too drunk to give consent. the defense argues that mayes and richmond did not commit rape that night. a friend testified she received a text from the girl two days after the alleged incident where the accuser described not even knowing exactl

candy, back to you. >> thanks to poppy harlow in steubenville, ohio. a 16-year-old and 17-year-old have been found guilty, delinquent, as they say in juvenile court by a juvenile court judge. one has been sentenced to two years in jail and another to one, at least one, that is the minimum. they both could serve until they are 21 years old. just recently, we also heard from the ohio attorney general mike dewine. here's some of what he had to say. >> there seems to be an unbelievable casualness about rape and about sex. it is a cavalier attitude. a belief that somehow there isn't anything wrong with any of this. rape is not a recreational activity. we cannot bring finality to this without the convening of a grand jury. we have 16 witnesses who wouldn't talk to us. this community also desperately needs to know that justice was done and desperately needs to know that no stone was left unturned. >> again, that is the attorney general of ohio. mike dewine saying this investigation isn't complete. they will, in fact, convene a grand jury and see what else the

abc's alex perez has details from steubenville. hi, alex. >> reporter: good morning, dan, after months of speculation and worldwide attention, the judge will announce his verdict later today. before closing arguments the 16-year-old girl took the witness stand and faced the two young men she's accusing. for the first time we hear from the 16-year-old accusing them. on the witness stand, she broke down in tears after seeing an explicit picture of herself. she describes waking up with no more clothes with mays nearby and rich monday nearby. they're accused of sexual lly assaulting the teenager. in court, evidence revealed that tense text message conversation between mays and the accuser in the days after the alleged assault. i wanted to apologize for the video that was put up in a misunderstanding. >> i don't know why you keep saying that you did because you obviously didn't. she replies the only reason you're even apologizing is to see if i'm pressing charges? prosecutors maintain that the accuser was too drunk to consent. >> she wa

nbc's ron allen is live outside of the courthouse for us in steubenville. ron, i understand the attorney general also made a big announcement directly after that ruling. what did he say? >> reporter: well, he said essentially that the investigation continues and that a grand jury will be convened to see who else might be held responsible for these crimes. it was a very, very emotional and powerful day in that courtroom. the first time ma'lik richmond and trent mays expressed any remorse or apologized for their crimes's they maintained think innocence right to the end, and i think it's fair to say that until this happened, they may not have realized the enormity of the crime. there was a lot of testimony during the course of this four-day trial that suggested that a lot of the young people involved, the victim herself, didn't realize that what was happening was essentially rape. and that it could be prosecuted so severely. the attorney general, prosecutors, made the point that this is a very serious crime here in the state of ohio, and had these young boys b
