. >> steve, if i can jump in. how emotional was it for you today and what really does apple lose, and we can talk about this for three hours, but what comes to your mind? what does apple lose with steve jobs stepping down tonight? >> you know what? apple has been so proven. steve has kind of instilled in that company what it is that apple is very different than anybody else. apple goes out and takes the chances. apple sits in the cold and designs a product the way it should have been rather than the same way it's being done by other people. that goes on for a long time. that stuff is corporate culture and steve's done a really good job of bringing good people into the company that think the right way, especially at the top levels. so i just hope that steve is happy about the future for apple. >> what do you think steve jobs' legacy will be when we reflect back on his stepping down today? >> oh, that he was able to create products to really move mankind forward and give us much greater tools. not by an order of mag

in terms of steve jobs, how would you describe him? this guy's tough to work for -- demanding and very perfectist, correct? >> absolutely. i mean, that is legendary as far as how much of a perfectionist he is. look at the products he gets out of it. extraordinary products that they can sell at a premium. the average laptop coming out of apple is far more expensive than anything else. and then of course look at everything that everybody's tried to do with tablets, copying apple. he got it right the first time, and the most amazing thing about steve jobs is he seems to know what it is we want before we know we want them. like the ipad. that sort of culture, if he can -- if he's infuseded that into apple, then apple will at least in the short term, the next five, seven years, be just fine. >> right. so he is stepping down as ceo, but it sounds like he's still going play a role with apple. how important is that for apple's stability and success in the future? >> i think it is very important. and we don't know day to day exactly how often s

when does the steve jobs halo disappear? it's going to be around the next couple of years, but him stepping down as the active day-to-day, when do the products start taking a nosedive, if they will. a two-year delay, a five-year delay? >> i don't know if they take a nosedive. in terms of seeing the products as more than they are, that magical aspect, that ends as soon as he's offstage. while the products will be the same, recognize that the first iphone was basically the lg prada repackaged. what made it different is how steve jobs presented it. he presented it as something magical, something special. he got people to look at it more than the market had rejected. folks saw it for what it could be, not what it was. the tablet was brought to market by microsoft. failed sec tack larly. apple came up with the ipad. basically repackaging the product. people saw it as magical. it's that magic we just lost. >> what are we seeing -- christmas season is just around the corner. you've got a lot of big shopping days coming up. do you s

>> i don't think you can learn how to be steve jobs. steve jobs is singular. there will never be anybody like him. he is the closest thing the business world has to a super hero. i don't think anybody would deny that. in terms of the marketing flair, i don't think tim cook needs to have that, to steer the company in the right direction. i think with apple, it's about the products. and that's where the question of, you know, innovation, can he replace steve jobs in terms of innovation. the management structure at apple is actually pretty simple. there's a lot of people that report directly to steve jobs. there isn't a whole lot of dotted lines and mishmash. it's pretty direct there. it's also famously brutal. so the people that are there at the company are there for a reason. so i think that, you know, we can expect more great things from apple. but there's no question that apple is steve jobs. and this company is about to change. >> pretty dramatically i would imagine. tim cook presumably will have a salary slightly higher than steve jobs' $1 a year, what he t

steve jobs founded apple, along with steve wozniak, back in 1976, where he was best known for the macintosh computer. he was out after internal conflicts. the company was far from the leader in personal computers. a little over a decade later, he returned with a vengeance. just look at apple's stock. from $5.48 a share on his 1997 return to $378 today. enormous wealth built off a changed the world we live in. >> you lack at jobs and what he's done, there's only a couple of people in the past 100 years that can really be analogous to that. you've got walt disney, henry ford and steve bs. and, you know, those companies still thrive. they don't do it in the same way they did when their leaders were around. but they still manage to make it. >> reporter: in the cold, hard world of technology, analysts believe this will eventually mean an opening, an opportunity for the competition to take on apple. but that will have to wait. because today isn't just a surprise. it's sad. sad for the man who's fought with every fiber of his being just to go to work. to keep running the company he founded and lov

steve jobs stepping down as ceo of apple. joe, is this a surprise, lots of speculation about steve jobs' future because of his health? what's your view? >> the only real surprise is that it happened tonight, really. he's been sick for a long time. he has not looked well, obviously, in appearances recently. everybody he's had a liver transplant, a tumor on his pancreas. so his health, one assumes has been deteriorating, and there is a certain kind of sad inevidentability to this moment. >> obviously apple's become this extraordinary global business. one of the biggest market caps of any american companies in history. what impact will steve jobs standing down as the chief executive officer have on the company, do you think, if any? >> well, steve jobs is one of the great innovators in the history of modern capitalism. he's also one of the genius marketers. with ways of getting people to get interested in and buying products, that nobody -- we haven't seen in a long time. apple is going to miss that, without question. and the re
