steve brown just came out of that hearing. eve, give us an idea what happened. >> it was a rather quick proceeding. abdulmutallab did come in wearing a t-shirt that looked like government issue. he spent much of his time in the arraignment talking over with his defense team about what was going to go on going forward. he did stand up before the magistrate. he spoke his name. he spelled his name. he indicated that he did understand what was going on. he acknowledged he had been taking pain meds in the last 24 hours by and his attorneys told the court they felt he under what was going on during the arraignment. he spoke softly but was lucid and did respond to questions. trace: next date for hearing? anything else we might have expected with this? >> no. the interesting thing was the questioquestion of bond did com. the judge repeatedly reminded both abdulmutallab and his defense team that they are not even conceding the detention web's basically being held without bond. interestingly they did have him in the courtroom in the fron

steve. why is it that that ... neither of these candidates, neither of these republicans are considered to be conservatives in the way that scott brown was. the tea party movement is not embracing them whachlt is different and what's the same. >> these are both moderates. kirk , they are after him. in delaware republicans have rallied behind much castle because there's not much of a republican party left. he's the only guy in town. gwen, what i'd say is that these races you have to evaluate races on two levels. the local circumstances and then the national dynamics. in the case of the local circumstances in both places, republicans have unusually strong candidates who can appeal to independent voters and swing voters. and the democratic field in one state is nonexistent. in the other it's not what democrats were hoping for. they wanted a statewide elected official to be a nominee. that didn't happen. the candidate recruitment was critical. then the national dynamics are dramatically reversed from two years ago. >> ifill: let's talk about it a little bit. the national mood is generally considered to be cranky right now. does that tran
