governor steve bullock joins me now. r taking a few minutes. >> great to be with you, steve. >> what is the message to rural voters that democrats aren't delivering that you can. >> first, we're not showing up. if a third of the counties in iowa win obama, obama, trump and look over the last ten years, two thirds of the counties in this country actually lost businesses. those are the exact same places that voted for donald trump. so first showing up and saying you shouldn't have to leave your school, your community, your church or synagogue to make a decent living. actually then connecting on those issues that matter to them when 20% of rural hospitals in this country are at risk of closing. and, the trump administration is trying to rip away the aca. when you turn around and say that farmers are losing money literally farm bankruptcies are increasing, and the trump administration isn't doing anything for them along the way. so fighting for their issues which are really the here and now which are those pocketbook issues f

steve bullock is the most important person on the planet.planet, governor? >> well, i think that was good for my kids, but i'm not sure for me. i'm the only one in this field that actually wanted a trump state. we need to win back places we lost. we talk about recapturing the senate. we need to talk about places we had real good senators like minnesota and north dakota. we need to make sure we win red and purple states, have someone that won a red state on the top of the ticket. >> when you entered the race, the question was, you were a moderate in a conservative state, able to get kraks, able to win here looking at the next debate, not the fourth debate. why not run, and i know it's a march deadline. why not run for a senate seat. issues of climate change and other? >> sure, part of it is really, the idea of i go home each and every night and have dinner with my family. i still have young kids in this. knowing that president obama had dinner more with his family than any senator does across the country. part of it is personal, part of it is

steve bullock who's a long shot in the democratic race who's saying i can win in red rural areas.he republicans have some issues here, but so do the democrats. it's easy to see a coastal democrat doing much worse than mccready. if you look at the district, if you just were running in the suburbs, democrats say yay. if you look at these rural areas, forget it. they are getting redder, more trump as we watch the suburbs get bluer, less trump. >> the interesting thing about north carolina 9, it's a mixture of ex-urban and rural and where democrats had their revolt in 2018 was in suburban. if they are able to drive upturnout in those areas, mccready did drive up more turnout in medicathe county. you see that if trump makes a visit to certain states that he can help galvanize that base and turn them out. >> the president trying to reinforce that with tweets last night. we changed his strategy together. so the president taking some credit for that. if you're a republican even if you're a little nervous about trump f y trump, if you run for him, you run at your peril. the chamber of comm

there is no michael bennet or steve bullock up on stage with him. the question is they may not explicitly go after joe biden tonight. at the same time it's his stage to indirectly address policy differences that the others may be throwing his way. >> so let's talk about what's going to happen with bernie sanders. sanders in a lot of these polls consistently polls as number two. what's he got to do? >> reporter: that's right. part of it is reminding people he's still polling in that second place. that he deserves to in the front runner conversation. elizabeth warren and vice president biden, they are going to have lot of the attention in this debate because this is the first time they're on the stage together. however, they say if you look at what sanders has been doing over the last couple of weeks, if he brought back the bigger crowds, he's been releasing plans. he had five policy proposals since that last debate. they think that is going to draw people into him. and that's something he's going to focus on tonight. i think one other point here we'l

there are other candidates who are polling in that area, steve bullock, the montana governor.f some of those candidates drop out, klobuchar may be able to assemble some of those 1 and 2% into something. paul: car rove says this -- carkarl rove says this is a thre person race, sanders, biden and warren. do you agree with that? >> no, as long as we have debates happening, months before the voting starts, i think there are opportunities for people to emerge. i think klobuchar is still introducing herself to voters. a fair amount don't know who she is. when you look at polls of not who people support but democratic voters, what do they believe, there's a lot of evidence they are not generally as extreme as sanders and warren. so i think there is room for as you said a liberal, not a progressive leftist. paul: what do you think of that? some people think it's down to biden versus warren at this stage because bernie just -- he can't break through. he's got that core there, that core support from 2016 but he's basically -- he's giving the same talking points from 2016 and he's not go

you saw montana governor steve bullock who won reelection in 2016 as president trump carried that state. you're seeing a lot of democrats from these red states really start to come out in favor and you're also seeing public opinion polling shift this week in favor of impeachment, however, i would caution democrats on the polling aspect of this and really i would say look at more of the state level, the local polling, because we know what happened in 2016 when we focused so much on that national level polling. >> i want to ask you about more than 95% of the democratic caucus support some sort of impeachment action here but you have ten holdouts, about ten of those. how important is it for nancy pelosi to bring them on board and how does she do it? >> well, it is quite important to have the entirety of the democratic caucus on board, even if you are looking at a pure vote standpoint on the house if you are going to bring something to the floor in the house of representatives. the ten remaining holdouts are all in districts where president trump won in 2016 so it might be a little bit toug
