i'm steve chao. on this episode of 101 east we take a look at how japan says its final goodbyes.

i thought that was the mentality and fear of the chaos. steve: it is in 1989 right after the berlin wall fell. putin was kgp officer in dr dresdin. the euphoria of the division of germany was coming down. putin was in the outpost in dresdin which i went to visit. he describes the scene of the night a few weeks after the wall came down where when the protesters in dresdin basically surrounded and overran the stazi head quarters on the river there a few hundred yards from where putin had worked for five years. you know at end of the 80's. they describe the scene of people. he describes it as deranged. he saw it as a mob. it was a fairly peaceful protest. it is fairly euphoric. even among -- certainly not the stazi. the chief there in dresden realized he couldn't stop history. people were milling through the stazi headquarters. they were going through the files. putin was watching all of this in the kgp villa from a few feet away. a number of protesters went up the street. putin was the deputy. his boss was out in town. he couldn't reach him. he tr

chaos. >> right. steve, john boehner was supposed to have an easy day today. he was supposed to be a guest on jimmy fallon's show tonight. he's canceled that appearance and apparently according to "the washington post," is now working the phones. he's now in the position of having to fix this before he can leave. >> right. the question, too, is when can he leave? already it's going to be extended a few weeks now. he's postponing the election. we'll see how long that takes. there's a much bigger question around boehner, if this gambit to get paul ryan to work. if ryan for all the reasons that's been discussed says i'm not doing it, what is the next choice that boehner or the republicans have in terms of somebody who can get? the goal here -- they are saying this, the goal here is to get consensing. 247. they want the people who have been loyal to boehner to all agree on somebody. paul ryan is the only one out there who logically can do that. the other option if you can't find somebody who is going to get to 247. somebody who will satisfy the house freedom caucu
