. >> chris matthews, thanks, i have a number of all-stars waiting to get into this game, including steve schmidt, eugene robinson, james carville. your assessment of what you just witnessed? >> i think that pence's objective was to attack hillary, which would endear him to the conservative base. he really did at the end, as i said before, he was very religious guy, i thought he was going to start talking in tongues, he got almost -- meditative when he was talking about abortion at the end. i thought that senator kaine came in and he wanted to keep the tax issue front and center, and he did. we're going to be hearing about nuclear weapons as the campaign goes. that was part of his strategy in the debate. the debate was a little more acrimonious than i thought. kaine was very aggressive, he jumped in a lot. the base of both parties, the democrats saw things they would like, i think the religious people really saw stuff in pence that they liked, that they didn't see in trump. my guess is it's not going to change very much. it will give the religious people something to be excited about. and

let's go to steve stewart -- with the latest storm track from the national hurricane center. chris? an area of high pressure over maine, and lowering pressure over the southwestern atlantic, together are driving an easterly flow across the mid- atlantic. this will continue over the next several days which will lead to more clouds than sunshine the majority of the time. there will be some fog in the mornings as well. the atmosphere by and large though is quite dry, so next few days. the easterly flow keeps temperatures at or slightly below normal this week. . uncertainty increases with the forecast at the end of the week, and the weekend. the main focus will be matthew. latest guidance suggests matthew will make a close pass to florida and the southeast coast during the middle and end of this week. it is possible it makes a very close approach to the carolinas as well. however, a large amount of uncertainty remains with the track and folks on the east coast should continue to monitor matthew. regardless of the track, matthew will bring dangerous rip currents and surf to the east coas
