steve davis put together the text and information for the civil war trust's electronic version of their tour of the bat atlanta. so you can take a look at some of steve's handiwork there. he's a former id tor of -- book review editor for blue and gray magazine and civil war news. he's got a pair of books on the atlanta campaign in the emerging civil war series. most importantly, i'm delighted to introduce to you my friend from the great state of georgia, steve davis. earlier this afternoon, steve davis talked about the rise of john bell hood in charge of the army out west. we're going to talk about the beginning of the fall of that very same army with john bell hood. ladies and gentlemen, mr. lee white. [ applause ] >> chris said chickamauga. i've got a special connection there. that's one of the reasons why i did the little book "bushwhacking on a grand scale" to tell that story. but it's through that battle that my time there volunteering at chickamauga that i became familiar with the general patrick cleburne. and very early on in my career, in fact, my first really big civil war book was a biography of pat cleburne that i saved up from when we first filmed the movie for the park. we got paid $50, the extras did. i used my $50 to buy two books on patrick cleburne. and it's through that story cleburne's story ends at franklin. and so i've kind of been interested in it ever since. and indeed, during the 150th anniversary cycle, i went to as many 150th programs as i could. especially enjoying the time around here at fredericksburg. but one of the t

. >> steve, thoughts on that? >> i think davis right. they have long-term goals, for example, in education, when we announced the schwarzman scholar program. the president of china wrote a note as part of the announcement at the great hall of the people and said he wanted two of their universities to be in the top ten in the world in 20 years. part of the reason that he liked the schwarzman scholar program is that it fit in with chinese universities learning from some of the western approaches that we just take for granted. now, that's the kind of planning that we basically don't have for the most part. >> somebody does something. >> can business fill that void? if so, how? >> i'm not sure how business fills that void. i have always felt like between government and business, people tend to want to look at them as the same. they are really not. i've always looked at business, you don't mind churn. you don't mind companies going bankrupt someday. it happens all the time over the course of 100 years. most temperatures are going to end up be
