at 8:05 a.m., when i heard a good friend, steve scalise, had been shot, and we've all been living that anger, if you will, at our district offices, town hallslike, i did say something that i subsequently thought through and said that wasn't the right tone, wasn't the right words. i'm actually somebody that needs to also measure my language and response and not necessarily punch right back. let's just -- at least the half step back. yes, i do regret certainly what i said at 8:05 in the morning. i've been careful to clarify it moving forward. as far as safety, i've had a carry permit for 30 years. i do believe that a law-abiding citizen that is armed, that's out in public, will keep himself, his staff and, in some cases, the public safe. i'm a strong believer in the nra. i do have a carry permit. i have become lax. we sometimes take our security for granted. i am going to -- >> let me ask about that. i don't want to get into a gun control debate. doesn't feel right when steve scalise is in a hospital not far from here in critical condition. people can make the argument about how certainly police officers are not comfortable with many members
