. >> shepard: steve harrigan live along the shore in ocean city, maryland. fluke we have just gotten word from the national hurricane center two different important pieces of information. one, this storm is to make landfall in about an hour and number two, it's no longer a hurricane. and may, in fact, be something even worse. let's go to the wall and i will show you what i am talking about. we have talked all day how the belief was this hurricane would turn into something else. a hurricane has tropical signatures that stay with it as long as it moves along like a hurricane. this one has now added another storm to it. this winter storm that's been coming from the west. they have combined, the center of the storm is no longer a tropical like an eye, to what you see coming ashore here right along the jersey shore right about here is now what they are calling a super storm. it's a combination of a hurricane, a winter storm that's come from this way and arctic air that's come from the north. pushing into land much faster than anybody had anticipated it was moving

steve harrigan live from ocean city, maryland. steve, it has sounded awful there for hours. >> shepard, it has been awful for hours. some heavy winds and rain and really no way to get in or out of ocean city due to closures of some of the main roads and highways. as far as rescues go we have just heard from rescue operations workers here in ocean city. they have carried out at least 30 so far tonight. this is mainly national guard troops moving in humvees going to places where people are simply afraid the water is rising too high for them. calling for rescues. at least 3 or 400 people in shelters overnight and as far as the situation goes, with the flooding, downtown ocean city, parts of it it are heavily flooded and sealed off. one man spoke to us of having chest deep water when he he was walking through it. as far as the main pier goes here on the board walk where water has been overtopping that iconic pier has been smashed by 15 or 20-foot waves. we still have electric power where we are, but there are reports of up to 30 or 40,

our steve harrigan is there. steve? up operation underway here along the board walk which is is good news for people like this independent bobcat driver. he has been at it since 9:00 this morning at $100 an hour. even as the clean up goes on, rescue operations in low lying areas are still underway. we're hearing with the mt. vernon fire department. as can you see it's a very low tech operation. basically just going door to door looking for anyone who needs help. they have been finding a lot of them. even a day after the storm. ma'am, how are you doing? >> i'm doing fine. cold. >> how was the storm? >> the storm was terrible. >> were you scared? >> scared, not scared, just the baby. more scared for the baby than me. >> do you feel like -- came to rescue you. >> yes. we have been waiting since 1:00 yesterday. steve harrigan has more. this was a fair win?ition is conceding defeat, but also at the same time making real complaints. saying that chavez used tens of millions of dollars of government oil money to pretty much buy votes, spend it on public housing and spend it on pensions. so much so that there is real concern that the currency may have to be devalued pretty soon, shep. >> shep: steve, is there anything to come out of this that's positive for the united states? >> i think for u.s. policy makers, it is positive that this election was largely peaceful. more than 80% turnout, people waiting in lines for hours. there is concern, though, with chavez's direction, both domestically, he supplies 10% of the u.s. oil. he says he wants to sell more to china, less to the u.s. but real concerns about chavez's foreign policy. over the past several years, he's built a strong alliance with iran. that's something he intends to continue. so that's a worrying spot for u.s. policy makers. >> shep: steve harrigan, thank you. we're getting a warnin

steve harrigan is live in our florida newsroom.d, it's really these 11 constitutional amendments which make the ballots so long. for the average voter they estimate it could take up to 22 minutes just to read the ballots. so there is real concern on election day some voters may simply drop out. >> you get people who look at this long ballot. it's 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 pages long and they say that's too much for me to tackle. they get put off and don't go at all. people who might go and vote for senate and congress suddenly look at this as a daunting task and now they are not going to do it at all. >> those 12 pages printed on both sides in english, spanish and creole will have to be scanned into a machine one page at a time. >> shepard: i guess people can read them online if they want to. what about delays? are they working on a fix? >> right now floridians are being encouraged to vote by mail. several counties also saying they will actually pay the postage. it's going to be 1.50 for the ballot. legislators are pushing back against the cr

going to start off at one of the first towns to get slammed and that is ocean city maryland, steve harrigan streaming live to us from there. steve. >> reporter: we are in chrisfield maryland one of the hardest hit towns, it's right on the bay. we have been watching rescue operations throughout the day. the rain is coming down. floodwater tph-s three to four he town and many people trying to get out. yesterday the first responders were working by boat, today they are working by vehicle. we've seen a lot of national guard, sheriff's and fire departments out in humvees. people have been calling them to get them out of their houses. we've seen a number of elderly couples, as well as mothers with young children. they are scared, they are cold, they don't have electricity, and they are asking for help. we've seen them carried out really by hand, by these firefighters, many of whom have been working the past 24 hours. one fire tkhaoef told me we ar chief told me we are not getting paid for this but it's a privilege to serve. we have seen them break up the towns in grids going door to door banging

steve harrigan is live in ocean city, maryland. is not far from where sandy hit. t where you are, steve? good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, martha. it is worse here on the bay side of ocean city, maryland, than where we saw the storm coming in. it really peaked with high winds at 5:00 p.m. certainly hurricane gusts. this area of downtown ocean city was largely closed off. there was a mandatory evacuation. it looks like a ghost town. this st. louis avenue is pretty much turned into a river. it is a pretty strong current coming in. you can see the car half underwater behind me. most of the people are gone. there will be significant flooding. it looks like it will take a long time for this to clear up. there are some towns even worse shape than this. we'll try to get over there later today. as far as damages go, the main pier has been completely chewed up by 15 foot waves we saw last night and there were at least 15 rescues carried out overnight by rescue guard and rescue workers. two fatalities in maryland. one from a tree coming down and a car skidded o

steve harrigan live in our miami bureau with more. reporter: the original number in this case was 36. that was brought to florida state officials by a watchdog organization that claim that the 34 people vote ned florida and in a second state at the same time in a previous federal election. out of those 34 cases so far state officials have found enough evidence in two of them to pass them onto law enforcement but they will continue to review the other 34 cases. there are concerns about the state of florida as a potential site for double voting. for one thing it is a place where people have second homes and absentee balloting could enable them to vote in other places, the main reason being there is no national database of voter registration. florida unlike many other states doesn't participate in regional information sharing with other states. so it's hard to cross check if you're registered to vote in florida whether or not you could be registered in another state to vote at the same time. megyn. megyn: thank you. more than 40 years aft

we want to go live to steve harrigan with the latest in ocean city, maryland. >> reporter: the wind is. gusts up to 45 miles an hour and the rain heavy as well up to 1 inch every two hours. you can look out at this beach it many coming up to the seawall sometimes topping over the seawall. the waves have gotten bigger. when it tops over the sea wallet many throwing sand on the boardwalk and some of the destruction. the water beginning to seep into buildings. the iconic pier on the edge of this boardwalk has been partially destroyed. we have gotten stern warnings from the governor about staying off the roads. here is what the governor of maryland had to say. >> there will undoubtedly be some deaths caused about it intensity of this storm. by the floods and tidal surge and by the waves. the more responsibly citizens act the fewer people will die. right now people are being told to stay in their homes. megyn, back to you. >> reporter: you can see a true sense of the size of this storm when you see from it above. these pictures courtesy of nasa. hurricane sandy nearly 1,000 miles across. th

steve harrigan is live outside the miami marlins' ballpark. steve?> reporter: gregg, a remarkable comeback story we're likely to see unfold tonight. seven years ago adam greenberg was a 24-year-old outfielder for the cubs. on the first pitch of his first major league at bat he was struck by a fast ball traveling at 92 miles an hour. he was hit just under the helmet in the back of the head. here's how adam described that plow. >> turned to get out of the way, but unfortunately, i didn't get out of the way enough, and it caught right up under my helmet, so it made direct contact with my skull, and i felt like my head split open. grabbed my head immediately, i thought i was holding it together because it really felt like it submit, and i was just -- split, and i was just pretty scared. >> reporter: for some time after that, adam suffered double vision, he was sent down to the minors and struggled there for some time in the minor leagues. now tonight he gets his shot back with the miami marlins. he signed a one-day contract, and really the motivation has
