steve harrigan is joining us live from miami with the very latest on this story, steve? >> reporter: more questions today to the judge from the 12-person jury indicating the jury is still struggling as to whether or not they believe michael dunn's claim of self-defense in this 2012 shooting in which dunn fired ten shots into an suv killing 17-year-old african-american. the judge has told the jury that each of these charges has to be considered separately. dunn faces charges not only of first-degree murder which could put him in prison for life but also attempted murder. the other three passengers in the vehicle those charges carry at least 20 years. throughout this case the defense has said that dunn acted in self-defense, he claims he saw a shotgun pointed at him despite the fact that police never found any such weapon. the prosecution has alleged that dunn acted with premeditation that he fired ten shots into that vehicle attempting to kill and that he never informed police that he saw any weapon pointed at him until much later on. never even informed police about the

let's bring in steve harrigan now in miami live with the latest. tell us what is the latest today? >> after four days of deliberation, the 12 person jury has come back to the judge again this morning for more questions. asking if the charges should be considered separately. dunn is facing five separate charges in addition to murder. three counts of attempted murder. the judge instructed the jury they should consider them all separately. those attempted murder charges carry penalties up to 20 years. four days in, the courtroom is clear and that jury could come back with a verdict any minute. >> sometimes in cases like this, there is now concern that prosecution might have overreached. >> the jury is certainly deadlocked on something, at least one charge. much the speculation is over that first degree murder charge that. would carry life in prison. also means they believe that dunn was premeditated in his attack on 17-year-old, a deliberate attempt to murder. that's been the hang up so far. that would require life in pris prison. dunn claims he simply acted in self-defense. he claims

steve hair -- harrigan is in the florida newsroom. the judge cleared something from the courtroom. might have been something going on the jury room? >> he was concerned people could overhear the discussions in the jury room so he cleared it as they continued to await a verdict. they've been at it now for 17 hours. they could be debating guilt or innocence or what charge does this rise to the level of, first degree, second degree murder or manslaughter. the 12 person jury is eight mines, two african-americans, one homic and one asian. >> it's my understand that the defendant attorney spoke about comparisons to george zimmerman's trial. what was said there? >> defense attorney came out and spoke to reporters for the first time. he said there's a lot of politics behind the case. he said if the state did not fail in its attempt to convict george zimmerman they would not be talking about michael dunn today. >> the problem with the media attention, and then this happening on the heels of it and, and hen this case is on he heels of a not guilty with george zimmerman, i think just escalate
