senior correspondent steve harrigan is in asheville, north carolina now and steve, i want to know with the death toll going up. people will have to get through a long dark night without utilities. what are people telling you where they are right now? >> well, imagine just take a look around me. this is where people are right now. there is really very few ways to get out of here. the whole landscape along the river has been transformed by this storm. you not only see snapped trees and power lines, but things upping trees. basically pieces of furniture, pieces of clothing. it is really pretty much where the wind and water left these things. the whole landscape has been transformed. the death toll is over 107 right now. right here in this county here it's more than 35 killed. that number will keep rising. they really need the basics here when you talk to volunteers. food and water. at 2:00 p.m. today they'll start getting food and water at stations set up around asheville. certainly initially a lot of these first responders were simply overwhelmed by the force of this storm. we spoke to o

we want to go back now to steve harrigan who was on the ground. and that's one of the areas that is in that big bend area and steve can tell us about what are you seeing and hearing. >> you've made a couple of pretty important points. first adalia a year ago,... >> that's a sparsely populated area. because the storm is so huge and because it's so fast-moving, it's really not over by a long shot. in many ways it's getting going. you heard the governor say the storm is just to the east of us. that's what they were rooting for in tallahassee. if it goes east of tallahassee that means less damage to tallahassee, a city of 30 miles inland, of 200,000 people. a city with a lot of trees. it could have been devastated if it was a little bit further west. tallahassee might have dodged a bullet but a big chunk of the southeast has not yet dodged a bullet so the hurricane has made landfall but there is still a lot of trouble ahead for georgia and for the carolinas. >> trace: standby if you will because we've now got information that helene has in fact made l

steve harrigan is joining us with new details. steve, still what we know so far was to mark an unknown number of injuries on the suspect has been arrested. and what was described as a chaotic scene there in georgia with officers swarming that campus and students rushing for shelter in the football stadium. what can you tell us now? >> you are right. it was chaotic a few hours ago but right now that chaos has faded. there's a huge law enforcement presence on the ground here. you have state and local authorities as well as the fbi, helicopters as well flying overhead but there seems to be a real effort to tamp down the sirens. just a lot of blue flashing lights as now parents are reuniting with their children. the key facts, we still don't know. we know there are multiple gunshot victims. we don't know how many or how many dead. also the shooter is in custody appeared we don't know anything about the shooter whether he was a student here or what his connection is to the high school of about 2,000 feared we are also hearing anecdotal

let's go to steve harrigan in crystal river, florida, with more. what are you seeing?rhaps none more so than in unicoi tennessee just east of knoxville. it was a rural hospital and they try to get the patients out due to quickly rising flood water. i tried to get them out with ambulances because the water was too high in the used boats but it was too windy finally they brought them to the roof and used helicopters to get the patients to safety. not everyone is so fortunate the storm has killed now 39 people over four different states and the number has been rising all afternoon. despite other warnings when you talk to a lot of people many seemed stunned about what has happened here. >> entire houses are missing or flattened in on themselves. >> just didn't expect this to happen. like living over here wasn't something that came across my mind. this is so crazy and it felt so bad for the people's cars that are underwater. >> airports in major highways back open but it could take another day or two for the small business owners, many of them using just squeegees and broom

steve harrigan is on the ground with the latest. >> reporter: the state law enforcement officials aret walking up to the microphones now, but quickly i can tell you, georgia bureau investigation has arrested the father, 54-year-old colin gray, the father of the suspected 14-year-old shooter, colt gray. he's facing multiple charges, murder, manslaughter, cruelty to children. this is really something new. we saw it a few years ago at a school shooting in michigan, that's when the parents were held responsible for the school shooting carried out by a minor child. those parents in michigan facing ten years, the father here could be facing a long time in jail if his son is found guilty and he is found guilty, murder, manslaughter, cruelty to children, and he's under arrest now. >> jesse: thank you steve, let's listen in.
