joining us now is steve kornacki, host of the cycle. good to see you. >> great to be here. >> the thing mcconnell is great at in my view is getting politics right. he tends to see the political calculation correctly. and you wonder if he has it correct here. the most important fact is not that 15% of people are uninsured, but 85% of people are insured. republicans are here, that covering the uninsured is not a political winner and it's better to give it lip service and move on to other things in the agenda? >> some people would say part of getting politics right is not admitting in public the things he's admitting to. but his analysis is correct. the important thing to keep in mind in terms of how health care politics play out, when health care exists as an abstract campaign idea, think about 1992 with bill clinton. he made universal health care a big part of the campaign. everybody should have access to good health insurance. and if you're arrested, you get a lawyer, if you're sick, you get a doctor. the same thing for obama in 2008. t

joining us now is steve kornacki, cohost of "the cycle." thank you for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> is there a republican era in modern history other than the exalted ronald reagan, which is a given, that it would make sense for the republicans to harken back. they have a problem harkening back to romney dad and a big problem harkening back to bush/cheney. is there safer territory? >> there's two invented things you're dealing with. one is the invented reagan legacy, which they like to fall back on. a guy who would never raise taxes, but the second one is how they came to terms with the bush years. and it's basically what they decided to do is engage in a retroactive accountability campaign that cracked in about 2009. they said, oh, by the way, we were offended by the way this guy governors and the way he governed sold out conservatism as we understand it and set the groundwork for obama to be elected in 2008. the 0 to this, the response is to be even more absolutist, totally pure, and totally a washington, d.c. outsider. that's

the co-host of msnbc's "the cycle," krystal ball and steve kornacki. so eric fernstrom has been with romney for a long time. i think that's who rupert's talking about. >> it seems likely, given the way things have happened. i wonder who rupert's talking about, that guy. yeah. of course the irony here, i had a friend in town this weekend from canada, who doesn't follow the american political system closely. and when i explained to him that mitt romney had imposed the exact same health care law in massachusetts that he's now railing against across the country, he founded just the most absurdly insane thing. and this situation where he's having to talk about, okay, it's not a tax, it's penalty, because this is what i did in massachusetts, and i campaigned on the fact that i didn't raise taxes in massachusetts points out the absurdity, not only with the health care issue, but he also raised, in one year alone, over $500 million in user fees that he claims weren't taxes. so if this is a tax, aren't those taxes as well? >> steve, eric fernstrom's a professio

steve kornacki, are we going to eventually see mitt romney's tax returns? >> i'm starting to think haley barbour came out yesterday and basically said yes, if i was mitt romney i would release. haley barbour hasn't been the biggest, most supportive romney backer but he's a prominent republican. it reminded me of when we were going through this at the republican primaries. at that point back in january romney had released zero as was trying to hold that off until he got through the primaries and chris christie said mitt romney sh should go forward and release these. i'm starting to think this is building towards something where there will be more of a release here. will it be as definitive as what his father put out, i doubt that. i do think there will be more coming at some point. >> i think the obama campaign has to say over and over again, swiss bank accounts, cayman islands. the script writes itself. >> it does. but what if we're going to learn more bad things from his tax returns? i really do think since we've sat here since january, we've had similar c
