. >> so, kelly, this is steve kornacki. part of this story, then, involves the potential nomination of susan rice, the u.n. amambassador, to replace hillary clinton at the state democratic. it's susan rice who a lot of republicans have decided lied to the public. they allege was executing some kind of intentional cover-up plot by the administration. i don't know how that would work or what the cover-up would be. be that as it may, that's what republicans are saying. you have john mccain and lindsey graham both saying if her nomination is put forward, they will filibuster it. are there any indications that that would become an official republican party position, because if the republicans unite, they would have the 40 votes to kill it by filibuster. >> there is a lot of opposition among republicans to a potential susan rice nomination. people are not actively talking about filibuster, although that's the obvious presumption if you talk about members trying to block something like this. in some was they are saying that she wa

somewhere steve kornacki just smiled. anyway, she says dc has dealt us two horrible options. both as appalling as they are unnecessary. the first is to plunge over the fiscal cliff and endure both unpopular and frankly devastating cuts. the second choice is to avoid the fiscal cliff by cutting the same programs that would have fallen victim to the cliff. the only difference with this option is that it would include tax cuts for the rich. so it would seem we're stuck between a cliff and a hard place. but for one of the leading voices of women in this country, there is a third choice. and the guest spot today we've got the president of the national organization for women, terry o'neill. thank you so much for being with us. >> it's great to be with you. >> so you talk about these two terrible choices. i actually totally agree with you there. what is the third option? >> the third option is an aggressive jobs program. the real crisis that's facing our country, both for women and for men, is a lack of jobs. we've got about 5 million people that could be put to work right

joining us now is steve kornacki, co-host of msnbc's "cycle" and senior writer for salon.com. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> we talk about october surprises as something that's very frequent in american politics as if there's one every year. i don't think there have been very many that have been this big. the suez in 1956. the bin laden tape in 2004. a big external event imposing itself on the election in a way that distracts the country's attention, i don't think there's many things like this. because there's such a small sample size, do we know how these things are expected to affect an election? >> no, we don't know. the scale is totally different, but think back to 2000 when in the final days of the election you had the dui revelation about george w. bush. if you remember in that campaign, bush had actually been leading in the popular vote poll and had his electoral college problem then he ended up losing the popular vote and winning electoral college. there's a lot of -- the research that's been done has said the dui thing didn't have that much impact.

i'll have steve kornacki here in just a moment to analyze the impact of this debacle on the election overall. but joining us now is a combatant in the current fight right now if nl. scott ars know is executive director of the florida democratic party suing for more early voting in the sunshine state of eight-hour lines to vote. thank you for your time. i know you're very busy. >> thank you for having me. appreciate it. >> it was amazing watching the realtime reporting today coming out of south florida and what was going on there. first of all, let me ask you, if i got anything wrong in terms of trying to explain what's going on. and let me ask if you have any updates for us on the current battle over those early voting rules? >> well, you got it absolutely right, rachel. what we've seen here is just an explosion of enthusiasm from florida voters, particularly democrats, all across the state. really having a record early vote. we had on saturday the largest early vote in florida history and it's just been great to see. but what you've also seen is the problems that come with it when y
