joining us now is steve kornacki, host of msnbc weekend morning show "up with steve kornacki." steve is a senior writer at salon. thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> why is it this can be happening and cuccinelli is basically tied? >> i think there's two things going on. the first is just the difference, you know, we think of virginia as a state that's trending democratic. that's definitely the story over the last generation or so. there's a huge different in virginia between the electorate that shows up in a presidential election year and the electorate that's shown up when obama has been on the ballot versus when president obama is not on ballot, the off year. virginia of 2008 and 2012, very different in the virginia that elected bob mcdonnell in 2009, the one that went republican in 2010 in the midterms. if that basic electorate shows up here, cuccinelli would have more of a chance. the other issue, other reason i think this is so close now is simply you can look at all of ken cuccinelli's problems then look at who the democratic candidate is. terry mcauliffe.

joining us now is steve kornacki. nk you very much for being here. >> happy to be here, yeah. >> so the audition here, if the republican primaries happen before right wing talk show hosts, is presumably for them to make the right wing talk show host to like them. is this a right wing strategy or a fundraiser strategy? >> i think what we see is the incentive structure is out of whack right now. it used to be simple. you could look at how george w. bush became president, and the overwhelming idea was to win, they lost when the government shout down in 1985. and money by claiming the most pure ground, even if it doesn't win election. >> there are a lot of people who, because it helped their bottom line, made sense for them, instrumentally, even if they realized it was not going to be the best thing for the party winning general elections. right now, though, i feel like we have the heritage foundation really pushing republicans in that direction, and we have the rnc really thinking about going in that direction. it was a l

joining me, chris hayes and steve kornacki. chris, the idea of war has loomed over every aspect of this debate. what are your thoughts as we find ourselves here on the eve of possible military strikes, possibly going it alone. i think for a lot of americans, that phrase even sends shivers down the spine. >> we should be clear here what the current terrain is and what the map looks like. there is no possibility of a u.n. security resolution, because russia and china won't stand for it. there is not a possibility now of any kind of joint exercise with the uk as we saw in that really stunning, stunning rebuke to david cameron that happened across the ocean. we should know it is very rare under the parliamentary system to lose a vote like that. we're down to basically us. and in terms of what the actual international legal foundation for a military strike is, that is unclear. the domestic legal foundation for it is unclear. so even before you get to the question about the moral calculation of whether it is right to do or strategica
