again, steve kornacki broke down the scenarios there.he republican side, when you have record turnout with all the states of super tuesday with the exception of vermont all of them showing so high, more than ever before, how much will that come into play as far as the general -- energized gop there and how that may win in the favor of trump? >> it's very worrisome for democrats. all good news for republicans. let me give you a couple of other numbers that i think may help to explain this a little bit. among republican voters coming out of the polls yesterday, four in ten said that they're looking for a change agent. someone to shake things up. only one in ten republicans cared about electability and the democrats, three-quarters wanted to continue the policies of the obama years. that's just not the same kind of passion that you get from voters who say, i want to shake things up. >> but we heard that from bernie sanders who said i'm relying on those. relying on those coming fourth the change. you'd think you would see that on super tuesd

nbc's steve kornacki. do you have your compass? >> no detentions. i don't believe in giving out detentions. >> that's right! >> the kids love detention. >> what are you looking at tonight? let's do the most likely scenario. he wins florida, kasich takes out ohio and it's close in illinois and missouri. >> let's give cruz missouri for the purposes of this and give trump narrow wins in illinois and north carolina. i think, then, donald trump, if you play it out from there, he's a little more than halfway to where he needs to be, 1,237 being the magic number. and if you basically say rubio goes away pretty much tonight, after losing florida, you got a three-way race going forward. if you make some pretty conservative assumptions from that point forward. if you say, all the states after march 15th, donald trump crack 50%. he wins some, but doesn't crack 50%. if you get cruz the types of states he's winning right now, south dakota, nebraska, places like that, make him competitive in the other states and make kasich competitive in places like connecticut.

. >> to steve kornacki we go at the board. steve? >> well, we have been looking at the arizona results tonight and it's amazing, we've rarely seen early voting affect a primary like we have tonight. we talked about it, they have been voting for a month now. donald trump has won the state and won it big. here is a look at why it happened. marco rubio is getting 15% of the vote as they tallied. in the biggest county of the state, maricopa county, this is 60% of the electorate in this county alone. what we know is that marco rubio in the early vote got more than 47,000 votes in maricopa county. they are now adding up the vote today in maricopa county and so far marco rubio has 82. 47,000 before today, 82 so far today if you're ted cruz or someone who wants to voting, how many of those would have gone to ted cruz? the other thing is, you notice on the arizona map you notice there is one county in the state, this is ted cruz' color, graham county, that is the most mormon county in arizona. it has the highest concentration of mormons in th

and as steve kornacki was just saying, he did much better than expected in louisiana. he was up 21 points in comparison to early voting. so there is this cruz surge going on and there is this sense -- if he can get the establishment to coalesce around him, he makes the point to me and to others that he's never -- that donald trump has never broken 50% in any of these contests. so you'll get a majority of republican vote it is you add them all together. >> how many primaries has ted cruz won tonight? >> six. >> primaries? >> i have to think about that. texas. >> and oklahoma, right? >> right. >> so this is the formidable opponent to donald trump. how do you see that? >> again, the momentum is surge and not so much how strong donald trump is but how weak ted cruz is. >> you can go to rubio if you're desperate and you're from florida. >> that's possible, too. i'm not saying ted cruz is going to -- >> i'm betting against cruz. but i'm also interviewing you, so i should be challenging what you're saying. >> i am saying that cruz has momentum. that's what i'm saying right no

let's go to steve kornacki with an explanation. >> yeah, well, something just happened. what we're seeing here is the votes come in in spurts. these counties will put big chunks of them up here. that statewide difference will change. a minute ago while in commercial, the race had tightened. it was down to about 17,000 statewide, because a big chunk came in from wayne county, detroit, that area we've been talking about. but we also all night have been saying there are some other areas out, one of them kent county, grand rapids. bernie sanders doing well there. it's not been out all night. we'll take a look. it just came in. and see this? bernie sanders now a 16,000-vote margin there, so most of that, i think close to 90% now in from grand rapids, in that area. that affected the statewide total. it had helped bring bernie sanders -- now we've just had more vote come in while i've been here. let's take a look at wayne. we've been saying all night this sort of the be all and end all, and there you go, hillary clinton up now -- that's a 53,000-vote lead in wayne. unfortunatel

steve kornacki is here. steve, we're going to talk demographics in this segment. how they shakeout in terms of education. >> the biggest divides we've seen in all the primaries so far, the college, non-college divide on the republican side. donald trump has been doing a lot better with voters who do not have college degrees. what do we see tonight, those with college degrees, 47% on the republican said, mississippi 43%, both those numbers lower than what we've seen in the previous states, where we've had exit polls. 13 states. not every state had an exit polls. this is the divide we've seen before. among college graduates, trump over all in the previous 13 states when you average them together, 30% of the college grads, cruz and rubio right behind him now, little misleading, because the cruz number jumps up, in some, rubio jumps up. trump has not been running in first with the college grads, but high school or less, donald trump has been cleaning up in the republican primaries so far. dominating, getting close to half the vote there. so again, what you're seeing i

steve kornacki is looking at the sort of best case scenario for donald trump tonight. whether there is a chance that he can sort of lockup the nomination tonight. >> yeah, i mean, sort of two questions here. you look at this in terms of can he win florida and knock marco rubio out. i think a lot of people look at that and says if he does that obviously a good night for him, difficult to stop. what that would mean if he pulled it off, did well in the other states, you look at where the delegates are right now. you need 1,237 now. if he did well elsewhere, he'll be sitting at 750 delegates. ted cruz will be 300 behind him. that would be a big lead for donald trump going forward. the more interesting question i think is to play this out, how vital is winning ohio tonight to donald trump winning that first ballot majority and avoiding the contesting convention that so many are pinning their hoping on. let's say he wins florida, he loses ohio, he does okay elsewhere. where will he be sitting at the end of the night. he'll be sitting at 640 delegates. what does it mean? here

for ohio and north carolina, steve kornacki has a look at the evangelical vote in those states. steve. >> let's look how it is breaking down. we'll start in ohio. a little different than what we've seen nationally. it's kasich's home state. you're not going to see any other state where john kasich is tied for the lead. we haven't seen it so far, but tonight, john kasich tying for the lead. this is about half the electorate in ohio, among non-evangelica non-evangelicals, kasich doing better. you talk about ted cruz, the states that ted cruz has won, where he has defeated donald trump. he has won the white evangelical vote, and he has won it solidly. so if he is going to pull an upset in north carolina tonight, that's key. so with that in mind, how did the white evangelicals vote in north carolina tonight. well, cruz, it looks like at least according to the exit poll data we have got close to donald trump, but donald trump still leading in north carolina by a point among white evangelical voters, make up 60% of the republican electorate there. that's interesting to keep an eye on.

steve kornacki, thanks.ecause at this point in the campaign, nothing goes unnoticed more than that, everything gets noticed, and distributed widely, it is interesting to note where the candidates are going to be tonight, starting with this next one. hillary clinton has already been awarded two state victories, head quarters is in miami. that's where andrea mitchell is covering for us. andrea. >> well, brian, first of all, miami and florida are not voting tonight. but they're voting on march 15th, when hillary clinton is hoping to really narrow down this nomination if everything goes well. she has already as you know, virginia and georgia, the two biggest delegate states tonight has won those and both states that she lost to barack obama in 2008. they especially feel good about virginia where she won the white vote as well as the african-american voice. we're not going to stay up for those returns for america somoa, six delegates, five super delegates, pleading with them for their delegate votes. >> let's go

and one item that steve kornacki has been able to dig up, steve? >> yes, if we look at the primary and the exit poll data to give you the information on the entire democratic electorate today. first of all, the things we're see, the black vote, clinton, 83-16, this is what the campaign saw six months ago and said they would fix, they didn't. hillary clinton cleaned up with the black vote today. this is a little new. we finally had a statistical reading of the latino vote. we have a lot of latino voters tonight thanks in particular to texas and you can see it's a clear 2-1 victory for hillary clinton among latino voters tonight. among white voters this is also a little interesting, for some of the early states bernie sanders was cleaning up with white voters. you are seeing right now hillary clinton overall a slight advantage over bernie sanders when is comes to white voters. why it is, you can see among women, hillary clinton winning them handily. among white men bernie sanders does win by ten points so when you look at it this way, bernie sanders

steve kornacki at the board with more on this race. >> so look, it is very narrow. it looks very narrow. but there's probably some good news for bernie sanders in terms of what's left. i can tell you there's a couple of pockets here where there's significant vote left to come in. half of the city of tlst. louis hasn't come in yet. the bad news for hillary clinton is, it's almost even in st. louis, the city of st. louis right now. they were expecting a much bigger lead there. most of st. louis county where she is leading is in right now, only a small amount left to come in there, so she's probably not going to pad her lead much more. the ace in the hole right now for bernie sanders is right here, the only other place with significant -- that's the wrong one, it's st. charles county. i'm going to press the one right one of these days. >> come on! >> any way, bernie sanders -- >> yeah! >> bernie sanders is leading here, so not much ground for mil mil to pick up and there's a place for bernie sanders to pad it and he's sitting on a 12,000 vote lead right now. >> thank y

as we wait for that, political correspondent steve kornacki is back with us. you're seeing cruz in the middle of the country. being southeast swath for donald trump and it raises the question. where is the marco rubio section of the map? the summing after super tuesday. people were saying, if you've going to stop donald trump, it has to be divide and conquer. cumulatively they all deny trump the nomination. the interesting thing is ted cruz is sending signals that he doesn't believe in that. he wants to push marco rubio out of the race and get a one-on-one race himself with donald trump. and the result tonight is a small but potentially significant step in that direction. let's play this out a little bit and see what would happen. take a look. this is what would happen after march 15. if ted cruz were to get the one-on-one race he wants with donald trump. the problem for ted cruz after march 15 is he would be at a huge delegate disadvantage. you look at the states that are left in the northeast. big delegate rich states. in the area of the country trump is doi

steve kornacki is at the board with new information on that contest. louisiana, what's the wiggle room? >> what happened here is early on, we called this early, we had big margins we were showing you, and we were showing you the polling from right before the primary showed a giant donald trump win. the early numbers we put on the screen, yet look at this. three quarters of the vote in, and this is a tight race, five-point lead for donald trump. it's been -- the margin has been going between 5,000 and 10,000 votes all night. here's what's happened. basically, this has to do with the early vote. they did early voting from february 20th to 27th in this state. it looks like more than 10% of the vote statewide is people who cast their ballots early. look at the difference. the difference between what happens in early voting and what's happening today with voting. let's take this parish, about 100,000 people live here. ted cruz has won this won. he won by a couple of points over donald trump. it's basically all reported now. now 15% of the vote in that paris

. >> let's talk with steve kornacki about where that vote is coming in from. population centers in arizona and what we should be looking for as we get more of those numbers. steve? >> yeah. this is all one type of vote from one place and this is a huge and fascinating story what you're seeing here. 38% of the vote. the thing you need to know about arizona, more than 60% of the vote statewide comes from one county, maricopa county, the phoenix area. we talked at the start of the show that so much of the vote in arizona is the early vote. what happened here, 38% of the vote is in from the state of arizona. that 38% is the early vote for maricopa county. that's what you're looking at here. something is missing from this screen because this screen only shows you active candidates. now, remember, voting has been going on in arizona for a month now. inacti inactive candidates, people who dropped out, people voted for them. let's show you what happened in maricopa county. donald trump, 45%. donald trump right here, this 119,000 -- that's a bad -- he got 45% of the vot

let's bring in steve kornacki. >> kansas and maine are in the books.o the running total on the side here. but i want to show you these outstanding contests. this one in kentucky, then louisiana and tell you what the delegate implications are of the result. we're waiting on a final call here in kentucky, but we can give you a rough estimate how these 46 delegates are going to be allocated. either way, trump and cruz are going to be getting most of them. right now, if this held, of the 46 delegates up for grabs in kentucky, it would be about 17 for donald trump, 15 for ted cruz. it would be about 7 for marco rubio. then you can't see it on this screen, but john kasich is up in double digits right now, maybe i can show you. he would also get delegates, 7 delegates, as well, in kentucky. the other one now is louisiana. this is interesting to keep an eye on as the results come in here. you have a couple things right now. donald trump you see, it's a big lead here. a lot of these delegates are given out by congressional districts in louisiana. the rule in lo

i'm steve kornacki in for chuck todd.lebrating the seven days of genius here at msnbc. and today, we're going to take a look at the genius way that barack obama's 2008 campaign team actually won the democratic nomination, putting him on the road to become president. and what that means for hillary clinton's strategy this time around. now, obama's 2008 team knew from the start it wasn't about how many wins they put on the board necessarily in those primaries, the name of the game was really delegates and winning the most votes didn't always mean winning the most delegates. so they set up a strategy that relied on a combination of complicated math and on-the-ground organizing, devoting time, energy, and money into caucus states the democratic candidates had previously written off. and that kind of organization proved key, for instance, in the nevada caucuses back in 2008. now, in that race, hillary clinton was the victor in the traditional sense. she won the caucuses by a six-point margin, but obama won the race that really

i'm steve kornacki in for chuck todd. welcome to "mtp daily." in the revolt against donald trump, it all comes down to this. we are, right now, just 14 hours away from the opening of polls in what will be a supervised tuesday showdown. we have winner-take-all contests in florida and ohio. it's a chance in those states for donald trump to deliver twin knockout blows. one to marco rubio in florida. the other potentially to john kasich in ohio. we also have primaries in illinois, in missouri, in north carolina, even one overseas. altogether, hundreds of delegates up for grabs on the republican side, in what could be the republican establishment's last stand against the forces of donald trump. and the stakes for the republican party could not be higher after what we saw this weekend. a weekend of chaos, of arrests, security concerns, threats of retaliation, and canceled events. all of that consuming the republican party's front-runner and his campaign, and prompting a bipartisan backlash over trump's inflammatory rhetoric. with that backdrop of unre

and msnbc's steve kornacki over at the big board. we call it the etch a sketch. e're always talking about the brokered convention, the open convention, whatever you want to call it. how tough would it be for republicans who don't want donald trump to actually bring that about. we thought we would start taking a look at tonight. these are the states up for grabs and the delegates in each one of them. let's play around and come up with what for trump would be a bearish situation tonight. things don't go that well. florida is winner-take-all, if those polls are even remotely why, winning by even a vote, he'll get all 99 votes there. but if john kasich wins ohio, a winner-take-all state, that's 66 delegates. let's say things go badly for donald trump, like a state like missouri. gobble up a lot of delegates there. could be a ted cruz state. let's say ted cruz takes the bulk of the delegates there. i'll skip ahead to the punch line here. basically, what you'd come out with tonight is something that looks roughly like this. trump, 646. and again, 1,237 is what you need.

they have shifted more to voting by mail and steve kornacki showed that.much, they were down to 60 locations here and lines running four to five hours. social media up in arms over this. people in arizona saying it's not fair, they shouldn't have to wait this long. >> look. if you look at social media all night long, there were reports of this. just for context, arizona is state that basically one-third hispanic and i think -- 20% of the electorate is latino. not only that, many new voters and many new organizations like many we dream, they're based in phoenix and these are people new to the process. so when they encounter long lines it's easy for them to get discouraged. by contrast when you look at the type -- the profile of those who participate and get the ballot sent in, they tend to be people with a life long voting history. among the new latinos who are new to the -- you know, the electoral process, newly citizens since we are seeing a tremendous rise in citizenship applications and especially in the wake of donald trump, i think it's up 14% this ye

i'm steve kornacki here in new york. new reactions this morning to the arrest of donald trump's campaign manager, corey lewandowski, for allegedly grabbing the arm of a former reporter for a conservative website. the incident occurred after trump's primary night press conference on march 8th. it happened as trump was exiting the ballroom. that's when a breitbart reporter named michelle fields approached trump with a question. and lewandowski his campaign manager allegedly intervened. police in jupiter, florida, say the crime was caught on tape, closed circuit video. that they say shows lewandowski grabbing for fields. he's now facing a criminal charge for battery or unwanted touching. that's a misdemeanor charge. the police report details an audio recording from fields' cell phone that says, i can't believe he just did that. that was so hard, was that corey? after the trump campaign's initial denials earlier this month, fields tweeted what she said she was a photo of bruises on her arm, saying, quote, i guess these just

steve kornacki, good seeing you. thanks. e in florida, and this tampa bay tribune headline says it all. hispanic voters along the i-4 corridor from tampa to orlando will be key for whoever wins florida. we were just talking about that a few minutes ago. msnbc's thomas roberts is in tampa. thomas, great seeing you. you have been talking to voters. what are they saying to you? >> yeah, jose. we're on the west coast of florida over here in tampa, in hillsborough county, and i'm along the river walk. a gorgeous day. a little breezy, and we have folks running by and on their bikes. as your guest pointed out, this area with the heavy influx of residents who have left puerto rico and while we saw marco rubio win that primary on sunday, when you get to florida, it is a closed primary. so you need to be a registered republican if you are going to be voting in the primary and have interest in support of marco rubio. so there may be a connection to family members or folks back in puerto rico that talk to folks here along the irk-4 corri

msnbc's steve kornacki has been crunching the delegate math. >> so how could trump get to 1,237?his is a rough number, but donald trump right now is at we are going to say 755 delegates. it's give or take a few, we will say 755. remember, the target number is 1,237. let's play this out and see what it would take. these are all the states that are left, the number you see next to it the number of delegates up for grabs. there's three states we are going to take off the board, nebraska, south dakota, montana, these are winner take all states, these are states that really fit the profile of places where ted cruz is doing well. we're going to say for the purposes of this cruz wins those states. let's take a look at the other places trump to get the numbers. he is at 755. let's start in wisconsin, a close race we just talked about it. let's say trump pulls it out, close but pulls it out, that would mean the way the rules work probably about 30 delegates for trump. that would move him from 785. the action is going to shift right then after wisconsin it's going to shift to the northeast
