because steve kornacki, thinking about that, that path steve schmidt was just talking about, what we just heard from paul manafort poo-poohing the meade to win ohio, saying their path goes through new jersey, is that a realistic scenario by your steve kornacki map? >> there's two things to think about here. one is that there is something to what manafort was just saying. the coalition that donald trump is putting together looks different than the coalition we have become accustomed to when we look at republican candidates. he's doing a lot better than mitt romney did with more blue collar white voters, non-college educated white voters. the flipside is he's not doing as well with college educated white voters. what does that mean? take the state of new jersey. new jersey is not one anybody ever really talks about as being in play in a presidential race, has not gone to a republican since back in 1988, barack obama won it comfortably in 2012 and 2008. the interesting thing is republicans did get relatively close in new jersey back in 2004, the election after 9/11. the issue of 9/11 re

steve kornacki joins us now to talk about what, in fact, tim kaine does for hillary clinton electorally steve, i hope you have your maps. >> i've got the maps, i've got the board and i'm really glad you put those numbers up a second ago, rachel, because what you just showed is really key to what tim kaine could do politically for hillary clinton. the short of it is he could really harden a pattern in the electoral mass that significantly narrows donald trump's path to 270. let me show you what i mean by that. first of all, you put the numbers up from '08 and '12. this is what the latest nbc poll out of virginia shows, hillary clinton up by 9 points. remember what you said, this is a state that all the way up until 2008 was a republican bastian. when barack obama beat john cane, that was the first time. now you're seeing not just hillary clinton leading but hillary clinton leading by a pretty comfortable margin, at least in our poll. if you add tim kaine on top of this, the vp picks don't help that much, but if he boosts her another couple of points. think about that, if she could put vi

msnbc political correspondent and garden state native steve kornacki is with us. eve, i know samson's lawyer michael chertoff. he is a smart lawyer. this sounds like some kind of a deal because samson was going to deliver more goods to the prosecutor. is that an unfair application? is a questionhere of whether he did to deliver something because the surprise nobody saw coming necessarily is that samson put his guilty plea in and that story broke and an hour later prosecutors charged another veteran of new jersey politics, secretary of transportation under christie, previously under a democratic governor, somebody very well known in trenton. they charged him with conspiracy to commit bribery, basically saying he's part of this scheme with samson. fox is fighting the charges, going to court to contest it. sampson obviously not going to be doing that. more of an open question about what david samson's role is going to be going forward. there were two reports today that david samson wasn't going to be cooperating and of course, if that is true, that is great news for c

i want to go to steve kornacki who has been looking into why we're getting a stack of arkansas speakers. steve? >> it's really interesting. you talk about the past being prolog. hillary clinton was arkansas's first lady with him in the 1980s. their political career began there. donald trump has made repeated references to the clintons' time in arkansas, to a lot of the scandals, or what were attempts by their opponents to create scandals in some cases, stemming from their years in arkansas. a lot of this was hashed out in the 1990s, central to the political story of the 1990s. you think of the white water scandal, which ultimately gave rise to the drive to impeach bill clinton in 1998, the whole monica lewinsky scandal grew out of the white water investigation. it was this cloud over the entire clinton presidency. the speaker that you're listening to right now, asa hutchinson, he was a member of the house when bill clinton was impeached. he voted to impeach. his brother went to to be elected to the u.s. senate. tim hutchinson is also a senator and he voted to convict bill clinton, to th

. >> steve kornacki, can you give us a little advice here in terms of what's happening between the podium and the delegations? the people who are at the podium are saying the name of a state or territory, then a number and then we are getting a little flourish and a different number sometimes back from the person on the floor. >> if you were listening carefully there when paul ryan laid out the rules for the convention, he said that according to this convention, the official count from every state will be what's announced by the recording secretary. so when the person up there at the podium says alaska, 28 for trump, 28 bound for trump, that means that according to the rules, as the republican national committee is interpreting them, all those delegates in alaska are bound to vote for donald trump and they will be all cast, they will all be counted as donald trump votes but then when he goes down and asks the alaska delegation how do you vote, the alaska delegation said well, we vote like we voted in our caucus. we have 12 for cruz, five for rubio, 11 for trump. so they say that, they get

we asked steve kornacki to take a look at how receptive that audience potentially is to hillary clinton. steve? >> yeah, it's really interesting. we're seeing a shake-up of an electorate that's been locked in place in a lot of ways since 1-80 2000, the bush/gore race. the divided nation, a lot of that locked in place since 2000 is being shaken up. and the reason is, donald trump seems to be creating a new fault line in american politics, which has to do with class. you might say it's sort of a blue collar versus professional. blue collar versus cosmopolitan fault line. so what you're talking about here, in terms of hillary clinton and democrats reaching out to republicans, they're reaching out to a very specific type of republican dem graphically. we're talking about more economically upscale republicans. we're talking about professionals, college graduates, suburban dwellers, more culturally liberal, uncomfortable with trump's rhetoric in the republican platform. we can see this already translating into poll numbers. here's a group of voters that democrats have never in history won. wh

we will bring in steve kornacki into the conversation. is this a picayune point? >> this is for history, this is why we just had a roll call of the states like we have never seen before on the democratic side. funny, this is the second straight week the traditional rules for the roll call of the states have been tweaked by convention organizers because of the particular sensitivities of the delegates. what we saw at the rnc last week was the fear that some of those delegations would be renegades, start calling out votes against donald trump so there was a ruling that hey, we are keeping score up here at the podium no matter what you say down there on the floor. the sensitivities tonight were simple. bernie sanders and his supporters made clear in their negotiations with the clinton side that the absolute bottom line to them was that every single delegation, every state, every territory you go through and all of the votes are cast and that all of those votes in some way are recorded for the future so anybody looking back at this convention, 10, 20, 50, 100 years fr

looking at the trump campaign's prospects against hillary clinton and for more on that, we go to steve kornacki. >> the question here is, how big is the dissent, how much dissent is there. what you saw on display on the floor today, how big is it. take a look at this. one way of measuring it is if you go back to the primaries, add up all the votes that were cast, you heard newt gingrich a minute ago say hey, donald trump got more votes than any republican candidate in history. now, that's true, but what that leaves out is that more votes were cast overall in the primaries this year than we have ever seen any time in history. if you add them all up, trump got 44.9%. he got 45% of all the votes cast. how does that compare historically? you see romney was better. he was over 50%. mccain was actually the closest to what trump did this year. he got just about 46%, 47%. bush in 2000 was over 60%. bush senior when he was challenged by buchanan got about three quarters. when he ran against bob dole in '88 he got about 68%. that 44.9% that trump got, that is the lowest in the modern era for a republican
