who better to walk us through these numbers than steve kornacki. my take away, when you look at the top eight candidates, 17 points gained by the women, 17 points lost by the men. what do you see in the polls? >> you can see it right there, second place, third place, kamala harris and elizabeth warren. we were talking in the first 24 hours in the debates last week there was a poll that suggested biden was going down and harris was moving up. the cnn poll continued through the weekend, not how folks responded to the debate itself but how folks responded to the debate that continued after the debate, in the media between the campaigns and candidates. what you're seeing, kamala harris compared to the last cnn poll and every other poll we have been seeing headed into that debate, usually in single digits, maybe 10% on a good day. the most dramatic improvement for her. biden sitting at 42, the former vice president coming into this race with all the advantages he had in this poll sitting at 22%. he had been running a little lower in the cnn poll than ot

i'm steve kornacki in for chris matthews. we have breaking news tonight in the jeffrey epstein case involving possible efforts of witness tampering, and another major shake-up in the trump white house. alex acosta is out as trump's labor secretary amid unrelenting criticism that the former federal prosecutor helped to cut a lenient plea deal in that sex crime case against jeffrey epstein. tonight in a new court filing, though, this is the breaking news, federal prosecutors are now accusing jeffrey epstein, who was arrested for allegedly trafficking underaged girls. they are accusing him now of witness tampering. prosecutors say that epstein wired $350,000 to two of his possible co-conspirators just days after the "miami herald" began publishing a series of articles about epstein's conduct and the circumstances surrounding that lenient nonprosecution agreement he cut with federal prosecutors. prosecutors write this, quote, epstein's efforts to influence witnesses continue to this day. as in the past, within recent months, he p

. >>> joining me steve kornacki, democratic strategist and distinguished lecturer from new york, basil and nbc political analyst rick tyler. steve, let me start with you. you've got a fascinating new project. i'm very excited about it. looking at how the power of african-american voters inside the democratic party evolved over time. what have you found? >> it's interesting because we always talk about the importance of black voters in the democratic presidential race. we thought we would put some numbers and some history to it. one thing we did here for this project is we went back and found every exit poll, every state primary caucus exit poll going back to when they started taking them, 1976. one thing that jumps out right away, you compare '76 to the most recent race in 2016, in '76 less than 10% of all votes cast in democratic primaries were from black voters. in 2016 that clinton-sanders race, 24%. we expect in 2020 it will be at least that high. basically one out of every four votes cast in democratic primaries come from black voters. over time that has been a significant increas

nbc's steve kornacki joins us now. >> reporter: take a look at this. took this poll. they did it within 24 hours after that second debate ended last week. you can see compared to what it looked like going in, the big loser was biden. he took a 5-point hit down to 33%, still in the lead but that's five points where he was going into the debate. kamala harris, her support nationally doubling in their poll, up 6 points, moves her into a tie with elizabeth warren, one of those four candidates there in double digits. you see a lot of other candidates here staying the same. this is conducted within 24 hours, the end of that first debate. remember of the second debate. remember the debate about the debate continued for a few days after. so that's the next question. the next wave of polling, did this trend continue, did it stay the same, did it stabilize for biden, did it get worse, did it reverse and get better? that's the next question for the next wave of polling we are going to start to see i think pretty soon. >> so the three at the bottom of your list, c

good evening, i'm steve kornacki in new york in for chuck todd. we begin with an unprecedented moment in modern american politics as the president of the united states is stoking racial hostility as he looks to mobilize his base in the run-up to next year's election. the president is not letting up after racially charged comments this weekend going after house oversight chairman congressman elijah cummings. he called his district a disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess and called cummings a racist after he criticized the president's comments. today the president called the reverend al sharpton, the national action network president, also an msnbc host, a con man who, quote, hates whites and cops. and don't forget it was just two weeks ago that the president suggested a group of congresswomen go back to where they came from. taken together it's an astounding display of presidential behavior aimed at minorities to go back where they came from or clean up their road en -- rodent-infested district. >> he cut the ribbon at the national action conven

joining me now, msnbc political correspondent steve kornacki, former spokesman for hillary clinton, and communications adviser for paul ryan, thanks to you all for being here. all-star lineup for this. steve, let me start with you. breakdown the numbers. what are you looking at? >> take a look. the bottom line, biden in first place. for the former vice president that got up there in the high 30s, low 40s when he first got in the race, now seven points ahead of elizabeth warren. that's one of the best polls, maybe the best poll that warren has gotten. we can show you three ways to break it down and see where the strengths and weaknesses are for the candidates. number one, by race. among white voters, biden, warren, tied for first. among black voters, biden support more than doubles, goes to 46% on black voters. kamala harris in second place. almost 30 points behind biden among black voters in this poll. that's a number to keep an eye on as the race progresses. is kamala harris' number going up, can biden count on strong support, retaining it among black voters. one out of four votes cast

steve kornacki, these numbers, the fundraising numbers don't always line up with the polls necessarilyt at the same time, they do -- they are a meaningful metric. how do you as you dig in deeply to all this read this news out of the warren campaign? >> yeah. i think that is one interesting way to look at it, kasie, line up all the candidates are polling. that's what you see right here, the poll average you put them all together, this is what the race looks like right now. again, we have talked about this really only kind of five candidates who are popping in some way in the polls nationally right now. and then compare that to what we now know about how much money they've taken in over the last three months and you can line them up this way. again, a lot of this, four of these five make a lot of sense, biden out in front. 21 million -- in the poll, 21.5 million in terms of what he raised. harris, she has surged into second place. her surge, though, is sort of a late-arriving surge. a lot is in the wake of the debate. her quarter two number, it's a little lower than warren who has been c

good evening, i'm steve kornacki in new york, in for chuck todd. and we begin tonight with some very late-breaking developments amid that escalating fallout over the president's attacks, widely viewed as racist, against a group of female progressive house democrats. tonight, the house is expected to vote to formally condemn the president's comments that those lawmakers, quote, should go back to where they came from. but there is now some high drama on the house floor, after speaker nancy pelosi just called the president a racist on the floor of the house. that caused quite a commotion and quite a bit of confusion. we're going to get to that in a minute. this is a drama that comes as dozens of house republicans have publicly condemned the president's comments, but the president, ahead of this scheduled vote, has now lashed out on twitter with a clear warning to republicans criticizing him or thinking of criticizing him, saying, those tweets were not racist. i don't have a racist bone in my body. the so-called vote to be taken is a democrat con game.

i'm steve kornacki in new york, in for chuck todd. we begin tonight with breaking news. we have got outrage in washington over the humanitarian crisis at the border. and a bombshell report from the inspector general this afternoon confirming, quote, dangerous overcrowding at migrant detention centers. you're looking at pictures from that report, which describes how adults and children were not allowed access to showers. it details overcrowding, prolonged detentions, and desperate attempts to escape, as border patrol agents prepared for possible riots. the inspector general also faults dhs for not taking, quote, sufficient measures to address the crisis. this report comes as house oversight committee chairman elijah cummings announced his committee wants to hold hearings with the administration's border chiefs next week. now, politically, this issue has caught fire with democrats. party lawmakers are speaking out after touring migrant facilities in texas yesterday. and in florida today. some lawmakers reported seeing deplorable conditions. >> one of the women said that sh

i'm steve kornacki in for chuck todd. and buckle up because we have a wild hour ahead of us.emocrats in washington raging against president trump and his administration. we are witnessing what could be a major moment specifically for democrats in the house. we are chekting a series of votes in that chamber very soon that will include this house's first vote on impeachment. the house is also going to vote to hold two top administration officials including the attorney general of the united states in criminal contempt of congress. so let's set the stage here. we are one week away from bob mueller's testimony. the pro-impeachment democrat al green has basically forced action on the impeachment question in response to what he is calling president donald trump's racist comments. now we are not sure yet what exactly the house is going to be voting on with regards to impeachment. there are a number of procedural possibilities here. they may still be being hashed out as we speak. but we are going to find out probably within minutes. the house as we say also going to vote on holding t

steve kornacki, a lot of people after they watched kamala harris do battle with joe biden expected there might be some movement. this was the first look we got at the entire group together. but that's a big jump. >> that's very big. i mean, five points, that poll has it five points when you think of all the advantages that joe biden had supposedly coming into the race, to be sitting in this poll -- let's see how this one looks in comparison to them. but to be up just five points and it is at 22% when you're the former vice president of the united states and you came in with all of these promises of electability, universal name recognition, all of these things i think that speaks potentially to seriously bad debate performance. in a debate performance that raised questions about what is supposed to be his core strength. and that is electability. and there was a separate poll that came out yesterday that has been asking democrats a very basic question. didn't ask the horse race question, but has been asking them a basic question. do you think candidate "x" is capable of beating donald trum

. >> joining us now to break it down msnbc national correspondent our friend steve kornacki. e, walk us through q2. >> april, may, june are the months we're talking about. these are some of the candidates. we couldn't fit the whole field on one screen. from most and heading down, you see the top money raisers here. an interesting way to look at this is let's compare the money that was brought in with how they're doing in the polls. see if you find some correlations there. you do. look at it this way. the top four and really the only four candidates who are over double digits in the polls, two, three, four, fifth place. they match up pretty much there but the outlier obviously is right here. it's pete buttigieg raised the most money of any candidate in the race in the second quarter, $25 million bucks for the mayor after city of about 100,000 people. of course buttigieg is back at 5% in the polls. we've talked about this. one of the things that might be driving it when you look inside the polls on buttigieg's support, you do find very politically engaged, tend to be higher inco

joining me now to explain those polls, we have msnbc national political correspondent steve kornacki., what do these polls actually show? >> well, we'll take you through them. we should say, fox news, the poll, the fox poll, this is a reputable poll. they have been doing this thing for years. we have been showing their polls every time they take them. it's considered a high-quality neutral poll. politically. here's what they're showing. when it comes to a head-to-head matchup, trump versus biden. you see trump mentioning it there, but biden, they have him running 10 points ahead of trump in a head-to-head matchup. this is something we have seen in our poll, in many other polls lately. biden out in front of trump, and biden doing significantly better against trump than other democrats. take a look at this. sanders still leads trump at six, not ten in the case of sanders. then you see elizabeth warren. trump may actually have a point ahead of elizabeth warren. kamala harris, also a point behind trump. so that range, though, broadly speaking, is something we have been seeing in all sorts

steve kornacki is here with the news. kelly o'donnell at the white house. steve, let me start with you, my friend. you have been digging into some of these fund-raising numbers and new polling numbers as well. >> reporter: that's right, hallie. cnn did this one. this is the first readout not just of immediate reaction to the democratic debate. they kept this poll going through the weekend. you see what they have is joe biden down at 22%. kamala harris the big winner, the big gain in the polling here. the question, will we see this in a bunch of others. we'll get a couple polls out in the next few days. does it look like an outlier or where the democratic race stands right now? this measures with the broader thing we have seen, which is joe biden's performance was not necessarily well received by a lot of democratic voters. kamala harris's was. one thing to keep an eye on. the racial split on the democratic side. you see among white voters, biden is still leading in this poll. harris got a big jump. white liberals have moved towards her a little bit. buttigie

for whoever ends up getting the nomination as our own nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki well. ali vitale. vaughan hillyard in detroit ahead of the two-night battle. steve, you have been doing this months tai chi long deep dive we are so fortunate to have sharing with our viewers here today. on how much african-american votes mean to the candidates. >> we thought we would put numbers on the democratic primary. this is the modern history, the share of the democratic electorate black voters accounted for. the project we put together since in 1976 based on exit polls. we didn't have enough to get a good number on. when the modern era begins, it was single digits. you look all the way to 2016, the most recent primary was 24%. we think that is going to be at least that high in 2020. so basically 1 in every 4 votes will come from black voters. what we did is look at all the exit polls. that else are hard to find. a lot of media organizations like this one, took them and tossed them in the trash. we have to go find them again. democratic primaries. you see who won the black vote

joining me now is steve kornacki at the big board.w you've been digging up long history of exit polls in democratic primaries and showing us the evolution of how african-american voters have become a force to reckon with in the democratic party. >> that's right, ayman. we always talk about the importance of black voters in democratic primaries. all the numbers up on dot com, nbcnews.com. it looks at every modern democratic presidential race going back to 1976, the first time you had widespread exit polling and you could start to look at individual groups, how they're voting in these primaries. the period of 1976 where we pick things up and the most recent presidential election, span of 40 years, black voters were less than 10% of all democratic primary voters in 1976, single digits. by 2016, that number reached an all-time high in the clinton/sanders primary. 24% of democratic voters across the country were black. and in 2020 we expect that number at least that high, maybe higher. basically now one out of four votes cast in a democrat

joining me with closer look at these new second numbers, political correspondent steve kornacki.ese very closely to get bragging rights. the other thing we often see is -- because it will be a couple weeks right. >> right. >> before we get to see the full numbers before they cycle through. some people release it early, little tease, other people don't. >> the buttegeig campaign saw a precedence look like in context with all the other candidates start to report theirs. and the other thing, of course, we talked about it earlier in the show, what the race looks like. >> well, that's the fascinating thing, right? because he actually went down. >> right. >> but he's the one reporting the huge numbers. . >> that's the interesting thing. keep in mind the second quarter numbers. we can go back to april. >> right. >> where the fund-raising might have come from. the other thing about buttigieg, when you dig inside his numbers, he has disproportionate a eel to higher income voters, college educated, tend to be more politically engaged. why is he getting such big money in terms of fund-raisi

heading into the next democratic faceoff, let's bring in nbc national political correspondent steve kornacki who is live for us here at the interactive board. steve, i know that this poll really broke down those different results regionally, but when we look at the big picture nationwide, what does it tell us? >> i think a couple of things, morgan. number one, it shows joe biden is still the leader in this democratic race. but 25% in our new national poll. nine-point advantage. remember when biden got in this race just a couple months ago, we saw polls with him in the high 30s, even into the low 40s heading into that debate just a couple weeks ago on nbc. he was in the 30s. the so this is on the lower end of where we've seen biden as a presidential candidate. it potentially indicates vulnerability heading into that second deb yatd and raises the question would he drop further after this second debate or is it an opportunity for him to reassure voters and to stabilize things for his campaign. the other thing that jumps out me the top four candidates, the only four candidates who are polling i
