joining me now is nbc's steve kornacki at the big board.mplicated for anyone, even for you, i suspect. how do you game this? >> extremely complicated, andrea, and in a place, new york city where the counting of votes has already been known to take some time. this can stretch things even more. it's an interesting experiment because this moefld rank choice voting and you're starting to see a push for it in other places around the country and it's a test in new york city and 9 million people to see how this works. this is the final poll, the most recent poll from marist, wnbc. you see the top candidates. if the result ended up looking like you see in the poll they simply would have taken the top two candidates and they would have gone and had a runoff election a few weeks later. everybody would vote in the runoff and the winner there would be the next mayor. that's not the system now. the system now basically is this. consider this the ballot, and there are a dozen candidates here in the democratic primary and as you said, when you go to vote

steve kornacki joins me from the big board with the race results and what they tell us. nal political climate looks pretty unchanged. >> yeah, chuck, one thing we could say, one example we have, it's the only one. we just haven't had a lot of special elections in the early days of the biden presidency. the special elections that have taken place ended up being these jungle primaries, this was the first clean republican versus democrat race. this is the only one before november. take a good long look at it right here. democrats hope it's a preview of attractions. you see the 24 point margin here for stansbury, the democrat. the number to compare that to is 23, 23 was joe biden's margin in this district. so republicans were hoping, yeah, if not to win the seat, they were hoping to get this to 10, 12 points somewhere around there to be able to say, hey, we've made progress in the democratic area. imagine what that's going to translate into in a swing district. democrats come in a point better in this special election than biden did. if you want to have a point of reference,

here to break it all down for us our own steve kornacki. steve, help me make sense of this.hat happens and when will we know the results? >> how did this happen is the question everyone wants an answer to and the new york city board of elections which, we have to say, has a history of making these vote tabulation processes overly complicated, overly drawnout and error strewn. they said there was an error yesterday when they were releasing an update on the results. what they were trying to release was not the full results. it was an update. they've withdrawn it. what you see on the board right now are the numbers you saw a week ago. remember how this is all playing out in the democratic mayoral primary. what you see here are the votes of people, the first choice votes of people who went out and voted on primary day last week or who had voted early. there's ranked choice voting and mail-in voting in new york city. the things that we're waiting for, the sequence the new york city board of elections says this will play out, the first thing they're going to do, soon, they're goin
