we just got -- >> all right, steve kornacki what? >> ventura county, next to l.a., another big one, 800,000 people. 2/3 came in in ventura county, trump was 38, recall is 36%. target for recall to succeed, about 54%. if recall is running 54% in ventura, it's looking good statewide. 36% in the mail vote right now. again we'll see. is there a flood of same day that could move it up dramatically? would have to be extremely drat dramatic. that's the fourth county short of the benchmark. santa clara, overwhelmingly democratic county. bay area here. but again, 22% in the mail, 70% of the vote in. again there's no sign in any of the counties we've seen yet of this recall having any momentum it would need to even get near 50%. one thing i'll say is, could be some regional disparities here. here we go. small one, republican. this is interesting test. this is a more rural, republican friendly county. northern california here. trump got 62% in glenn county, recall running at 68%. probably to succeed statewide has to be in mid to high 70s. it's

so we're going to begin with steve kornacki's report. steve, take it away. >> sure, thanks, ari.'re talking about here is the partisan distribution of voters. a couple different ways i go es to look at this. first the map that everybody knows. this is the 2020 election. biden wins. here's the electoral vote. here are the red states, the blue states. you see basically we know democrats concentrated a lot on the west coast, the northeast, somewhat in the west, biden flipped a couple states. in that clip you have michael steele talking about the county states. the 50 states in the country. there is more than 3,100 counties in the united states. so what this map is going to change here in a second, you will see all of the counties in the country. this is the red/blue map four the counties. obviously you see a lot more red here than blue. in the 2020 election, donald trump won more than 2500 counties. again, there is just over 3100 of them. more than 2500 went for donald trump. now, obviously, not every county is the exact same size. here's like a very dramatic example i can give you.

we'll have more on it in a bit with steve kornacki at the big board. of course once those votes come in, right, they get counted and we go through the mechanics of the election, the actual mechanics of which how you go from votes being cast to the winner being certified, you know, that's kind of opaque. we think of it just as a process where, you know, people cast their votes and then some stuff happens and then we get the final number and the person with the most votes wins. we learned last year that it's more complicated than that. there's an entire process. it's staffed by people, you know, overwhelmingly anonymous folks, volunteers who essentially act as guardians of democracy at key pressure points along the way. and we take them for granted. we count on these guardians to do what they're supposed to do. they oversee the polling places and count the votes accurately and certify the winner. but if you have an anti-democrat would-be authoritarian like donald trump with an anti-democratic movement committed to overturning a democratic election then a

steve kornacki, msnbc's political correspondent.thank you so much for being here tonight. i really appreciate it. >> happy to do it, rachel. i hope i don't disappoint. i'll do my best. i'll put it that way. i hope the bar isn't too high there. >> tell me about -- i mean, the recall thing in california, the history of it, the sort of narrative history of it, it's so bizarre. it's so easy to start a recall effort. actually getting somebody successfully recalled, though, is pretty difficult at the statewide level. ballpark figure, just first question, how likely do you think based on the polling it looks that newsom is to actually survive this recall effort and what are the kind of variables you're looking for? >> gavin newsom tonight has got to be hoping the polls are right because if the polls are at all accurate in this thing gavin newsom's going to survive tomorrow. what we can show you here, these are all the most recent polls. this is basically the final week of the campaign. when you see keep here, keep newsom, do not recall, no

steve kornacki is at the big board. great to see you. give us the numbers. at the moment? >> hey, hallie, it changed. let me take you through it. the backdrop in california, when newsom was elected in 2018, it was a landslide for him. 24 points over his republican opponent, almost always a landslide for democrats. state that joe biden carried by 29 points over donald trump. one of the bluest states in the country. and this recall is playing out. you look at polls three weeks ago, the recall looked like something close to a 50/50 race. these are the most recent polls that we have. within the last ten days. keep, meaning keep gavin newsom as governor, don't recall him. you see the newsom side has been winning in every recent poll. not just that, you see a bunch of these clocking in in double digits. if you average everything together that's out there now, newsom's side, keep newsom as governor, now with a double digit lead on average in the race. couple things have changed the last couple of weeks. democrats paid a lot more attention, you are talking about tha

i want to bring in steve kornacki. first, i want to go to gu add ven aig as.s. talk about turnout. a recall election like this is all about who is paying attention and casting votes. zblmt exactly. the latino vote is important. 30% of registered voters are latina or hispanic. the issue is participation. you look at public numbers, public policy institute estimates 50% are registered democrats, an estimate only 21% likely to vote in the election. all numbers indicate there is support for the democrats and support for gavin newsom in the latino community. in 2018, an exit poll revealed 64% of latinos voted for gavin newsom. the problem is getting members of the community to come out and vote. give you an example. two days ago i was at a barbershop, and the recall election came up. almost everyone in there said they supported gavin newsom, although they weren't super happy they did support him. we talked about the recall election, whether they were going to go out and vote, all of them said they hadn't voted, didn't know if they would vote, it wasn't a priority.

leading off our election coverage once again at this hour, msnbc national political correspondent steve kornacki. steve, what are the latest numbers? >> you got him right here lawrence. basically two thirds of the vote now in statewide. it's 2 to 1. no, almost a three vote difference to the. yes in the last two weeks of this campaign, the polling was suggesting that there was a pretty significant shift against the recall. they were all asking the question, we remember 2020, remember 2016, they were asking hey could the polls be wrong again? if anything, when you look at these results, the polls may have undersold the opposition to this recall. you can expect these numbers to change some, as the final votes are counted in. here because what's left to, come the remaining one third of the vote in the, state a lot of votes that were cast, today same day votes, people who went up to the polls and voted on election, they tends to be a more republican group. in a lot of people in california, they have a male batted at home, they drop it off on the day of the election, and it gets into the election offi

. >>> we actually before we got on the air tonight went to steve kornacki, our election guru, and askedhich i think is instructive and helpful for the rest of the night. he said, quote, we're going to learn a lot very quickly as soon as the polls close in california. most of the voting is done by mail and has been coming in for weeks. the counties are allowed to count that vote in advance and just about all of them will release everything they've counted so far within minutes of the polls closing. it, therefore, won't be that long after 11:00 p.m. eastern time until we learn a lot about where this is going. again, the election -- excuse me, the votes have been coming in by mail for weeks in most parts of california. elections boards are allowed to count those votes when they come in, they're just not allowed to say what's in them, what the results are, until the polls close. the polls close in about an hour. steve kornacki will be on live with lawrence o'donnell at the top of the next hour and we will be living covering that as the results come in all nigh. watch this space. l nigh watc

steve kornacki, break down the numbers for us. republicans clearly fell short. why did they think they had a chance? >> it was a steep challenge, that's worth keeping in mind. this is a deeply democratic state that joe biden won by nearly 30 points last year. it's a state that gavin newsom won by 25 when he first got elected in 2018. you saw the democratic messaging, you saw biden come into california on election eve, democrats basically were just trying to recreate that same divide that lifted biden to the big win last november. you look at the map and the margin, 70% of the vote in. i don't think these numbers are going to change too much with what's left. so essentially democrats succeeded in their mission. when it was trump/biden last year it was biden 63, trump 34. right now you see no on the raul, 64, 36. you see the purple counties are the counties voting against it, the orange counties are the counties voting for it. let me flip over and show you what trump/biden looked like. it's the same split. you go inside these counties and really it looks -- to giv

we now go live to election headquarters to our number cruncher, steve kornacki, still standing by since last november. steve, what do you have for us? ( laughter ) dasmen it! i told you! i forget to feed him! ( laughter ) should have got him one of those cat fountains. ( laughter ) this audit is a crushing humiliation for the gop, because not only was biden found to be the winner again, but the search for fraudulent ballots actually yielded 99 additional votes for biden and 261 fewer votes for the former president. ( cheers and applause ) wow! wow! he leal did get tired of winning. ( laughter ) the audit was conducted by a firm called cyber ninjas, who had no history or expertise in the area and whose c.e.o., enorsed wild conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen from former president the former president. so they hired maga fans and even they couldn't say 45 won. that's like hiring your mom to judge the handsomest boy contest and still losing to a 78 year old guy from delaware. joining us now is nbc's steve kornacki and news hour correspondent and moderator on friday nights, and former democratic strategist, director of the center for the political future at the university of southern california. welcome, all. steve, first of all, 24 hours to go. what is the state of the race? >> the late polling has certainly favored newsom in terms of beating the recall and keeping his job. you can see the most recent polls keep newsom as governor, leading double digits in almost every poll. you average them together, he's going into tomorrow the clear favorite to defeat the recall, to keep his job. of course, you mentioned joe biden going out there. joe biden carried california by nearly 30 points last year. this has become the standard or close to the standard democratic margin in california, when newsom was elected in 2018 his margin statewide was 25 points. so it looked pretty similar to biden last year. look, the problem for folks trying to recall newsom is overwhelmingly democratic state, you see red areas on the map. they tend to be rural. the big population centers,

to steve kornacki. as we do, jacob mentioned one of the reasons why gavin newsom won, right? our political team over at first read named that as one of three big reasons why he succeeded here. the significant advantage that democrats have over republicans in california, second, they describe how larry elder is no arnold schwarzenegger. and by that we mean elder, very much a staunch conservative, schwarzenegger more moderate in the gop, and third, polls show californians really support vaccines and mask mandates which elder was saying he would eliminate. talk us through the numbers here, what sealed the deal and where this goes next. >> i would offer just a different number, gavin newsom was no gray davis. gray davis was the governor who was recalled in 2003 and it jumped out me when i saw the exit poll last night, the opinions about gavin newsom, his leadership of the state, his leadership, decisions on covid questions, a lot more popularity there than there was for gray davis, gray davis had rock bottom numbers when he got recalled in 2003. a strong appetite to push him out.

. >> let's bring in national political correspondent for nbc news and msnbc, steve kornacki. fs, who is going to win the world series, but we'll do that later. let's talk right now about the recall. about two, three weeks ago, the race seemed much closer than it ever should have been for any democratic candidate in a state that donald trump only got 34% in in 2020. what are the polls looking like now? >> they look different, joe, than a couple weeks ago. you're right. three weeks ago, a month ago, you know, we were looking at this thing and starting to say, geez, you know, is something going on here? of course, for recall supporters in a state like california, that would be monumental. biden won this by 30 when gavin newsom got elected in 2018 for the first i'm. margin was 25 points in the state. if you look at all the polls in the homestretch of this campaign, there have been eight polls in the last week of this campaign. the average is newsom surviving this thing by 14 points. no on the recall by a 14-point margin. yeah, i went back and looked at the only successful recall c
