joining me at the big board where he lives is msnbc national correspondent steve kornacki. t seems like we're really -- chris hayes my friend and colleague used the phrase jump ball to describe what happens on novmber 8th. how closely have they tightened? >> yeah, on the left, you see the seats that democrats are defending, on theem right, you e the seats that republicans are defending. and then you see for democrats how crucial that pennsylvania race is. there is one democrat-held seat in nevada where the republican adam laxalt leads. if laxalt were to win there, republicans get a gain. the republicans need a gain of one seat. so theat function for pennsylvania, if fetterman who leads in the polling average by just over a point hangs on, it would basically cancel out a loss and allow democrats to keep the senate. it's the only seat pennsylvania is where democrats lead the poll average.d you talk about tightening, 1.3 is the fetterman lead right now. over the summer, it was 8.7, it's come all the way from nine to barely a point. democrats getting very jittery about their cha

in cleveland, ohio, jesse kirsch and here with me onset is steve kornacki. jesse, i'll begin with you. that debate was fiery and tim ryan got off that one good line. one of many some would say, but one line about you know, kissing you know whats. how did the rest of the debate play though because it wasn't one sided at all. >> no. and i should point out that j.d. vance threw that same concept back on congressman ryan saying he has sucked up to majority leader schumer in the senate and also sided with speaker nancy pelosi despite the fact that tim ryan wants you to believe that he pushes back on them all the time and has portrayed himself as someone keeping the democratic establishment at arm's length and one of the other points that stuck out in this same thread was when vance was being questioned for having the likes of marjorie taylor greene and florida governor ron desantis campaigning with him, he said let's not focus on these kinds of questions. let's focus on something substantive as he put it, like the economy and the fact people can't afford grocerie

steve kornacki is live for us at the big board as we are now closing in the on the midterm election. this poll shows and what democrats should take away from it. >> yeah, hallie, really interesting numbers because it gets at a big question that was raised by the 2020 election. we saw donald trump do much better with latino voters in 2020 than he had done in 2016, and we said, well, is that something that's going to continue into the future? so, we did here, nbc news and telemundo, a poll of latino voters, some really good data here. take a look at it this way. first, joe biden's popularity among latino voters. he does have just barely here above 50% approval rating. 51-45. compare that to voters overall in our most recent nbc poll, it's a little better. biden's doing a little bit better with latino voters but not that much better, 51 versus 45 with voters overall. where it really starts to get interesting is on this issue, though, of the generic congressional ballot, when you ask folks, do you want the democrats or the republicans to be running congress here? among latino voters in t

for us tonight, now with ten days to go until election day it is time for the countdown with steve kornacki

there's no better place to talk to about the state of these races than our friend and colleague steve kornackiing at? >> a couple of kornacki at the big board. >> a couple of indicators first of all. you look first at the president's job approval rating. typically, this has been the number most related to how the president's party does in midterm elections. biden, if you average all the polls that are out there together right now, it's a 42.7 approval rating. how does that stack up with other recent presidents 35 days before their first midterm elections? here you can see it. it's a point lower basically than where trump was in 2018. a couple of points lower than alabama, a point better than bill clinton in '94. the one outlier on this list was george w. bush, 2002, a year after 9/11. he still had very high popularity. every other president of the last generation or so at this point about has been right there in the low to mid-40s. and what's that's translated into has been big losses for president's party. you see all of those mid, low 40s approval ratings translated into big losses each time

. >> steve kornacki, thank you. >>> will the supreme court intervene over top-secret documents the federal agents seized at mar-a-lago? this afternoon, the justice department urged the highest court in the land to stay out of it. last week, former president trump asked the supreme court to step in. he wants the high court to allow a special master to review the roughly 100 highly classified documents to determine whether they are protected by executive privilege, and therefore, off- limits to federal investigators in their criminal investigation. the doj is now pushing back. in a new court filing, documents are extremely sensitive government records. mr. trump's request should be denied. this all comes after an appeals court ruled that the documents should not be part of the special master's review. the panel of judges decided that the classified material was government property, and that mr. trump did not have any clear reason for having them in his possession at his private beach home. the full supreme court could make a decision within the days on whether to intervene. mr. trump would n

nbc's steve kornacki went to the big board for us, breaking down which states are the most crucial for their narrow majority. take it away, steve. >> all right, a lot today getting closer and closer. let's go deep here on the battle for the senate. we all know where things stand right now. could not be closer in the senate, it is a 50/50 tie. the democrats control it because vice president kamala harris gets to break the tie for them. what you're seeing here, the way we have broken this down is the states that you see in blue, those are democratic seats right now. they are held by democrats right now. they are the five most vulnerable democratic seats. that is at least according to the polling right now. in red, you see the five most vulnerable republican held seats. coming into this election. so, take a look at it from the standpoint of the republicans. we say 50/50 won't do it for them, they need to get to 51, they need a net gain of a seat here to get control of the senate. which of these democratic seats is the best opportunity for republicans? if you look at the polling right now,
