nbc's steve kornacki joins us at the big board.have been looking at the polling surrounding the indictment, are the charges having any substantial effect on voters' outlook on donald trump. >> if you look, this is a reuters ipsos poll here, just in terms of what's in this indictment here, the idea that trump illegally removed classified documents from the white house, stored them at mar-a-lago, a clear majority of all voters, that's 62% say they find that to be believable, and if you break that down, though, obviously some big differences here. there's about a third of republicans who say that is believable to them. the majority of republicans say it's not believable, and among independents, nearly 60% find that charge to be believable. then you take it to the next level, and you say, okay, would that, should that be disqualifying? should that disqualify him from being the president again, and you see 50% there, 50% of all voters say they agree that that should be disqualifying. the vast majority of republicans don't. a majority of

thank you steve kornacki and julie tsirkin.et's bring in msnbc political analyst, david jolly, a former florida republican congressman who is no longer affiliated with that party. so congressman, just your reaction to what we heard from steve and what stands out? >> i think the big takeaway, what is consistent in all of those questions and all of those numbers is the permanency of the maga coalition, which is largely, vastly republicans but also some independents who have joined the pro-trump coalition. that comes through in each of those numbers, that donald trump's hold on a cultural and political movement remains as strong as ever despite now two indictments. >> a trump spokesman put kind of a positive spin on yesterday's event saying, quote, what did the other candidates do today? do we know? we know where trump was. and he went on to say there was no oxygen for the other candidates. i guess that's the old all publicity is good publicity philosophy. what do you think about that? >> if your candidate's a showman, right? if d

and also steve kornacki is at the big board. editor at large and also susan page also joining us. and so shaq, why is chris christie jumping in now, what does it mean for trump? he didn't to well in new hampshire last time around. but chris christie is battle ready and as a former prosecutor he might have a certain extra edge this time around? >> reporter: right, i mean, if you listen to what governor christie has said in the past, he has been clear that he will have that attempt to at least start some fireworks, start some sparks about the former president donald trump. it was back in march when governor christie was here in new hampshire at a town hall meeting teasing a potential presidential run. and he said back in 2016 he made a strategic error by trying to avoid the former president. but he's no longer that ally and january 6 fundamentally changed how he viewed the former president and he says he will take the former president head-on. and his campaign is being very clear that is the strategy. they want to be a counterpunc

political correspondent steve kornacki at the big board.estigative reporter at the new york times. do you see this as a campaign where ideas break through, or are we looking at something else here? is it about donald trump? is it about bombbass? >> talk about the visuals where steve is at in north dakota and in iowa and new hampshire where chris christie was yesterday. at this point they have no option but to do exactly what mike pence laid out there to the voters. on january 6th he was given the choice, donald trump or the constitution. he said that he went with the constitution. and for him, for chris christie, who helped donald trump with debate prep in 2020 against joe biden, there is that line that they are going to have to use, because they defended donald trump, they defended his policies, defended his statements, all the way up until that point here. so for the voters, mike pence, chris christie, they will have to make the case to voters, yes, we were on board with donald trump to this point, but we moved on, this is why you need to

joining me now are the staff writer at the atlantic, and steve kornacki, msnbc national correspondentank you both for being here, let me start with you, what is reasonably, emphasis on reasonably be best case scenario from chris christie here. >> i think that it is some form in his mind of redemption, because back in 2016, if you remember he had the takedown moment of marco rubio in the debate just before the new hampshire primary. it had the effect of basically stealing new hampshire for trump and then christie drops out, endorses trump, and is really aligned with trump through the trump presidency. and the way things and with the trump presidency, first of all christine over got out of that presidency what he wanted. he was consistently blocked. i think jared kushner had a lot to do with that. then it ends with trump denying the 2020 election results it ends with january six, and with christy looking around and saying, i put my neck on the line for this guy so i think that kristie relishes the opportunity. i don't know if he will get it, but you can see from that town hall tonight,

and at the big board, steve kornacki. steve, hold tight, i want to start with doug. chris christie.not a winner in 2016. wasn't even close. he says he's learned his lesson. what purpose does a chris christie candidacy serve? >> i think some of what it served last time. he knows how to pop balloons and we saw that in the debate. that was it. the campaign for rubio was over. he has a jersey attitude. >> anyone from new jersey would take that as an insult. >> of course not. badge of honor. frank sinatra was born there, too. he knows how to pop balloons. we don't know if that works with donald trump but if you don't try, there's no chance. a lot of the other candidates at least thus far have tried to go around donald trump. they want to talk about him a little bit but not by name. christie's going on full faith and credit into this and with full blunt force trauma is what he's trying to do. >> the trump team reaction was to kind of welcome him into the race and instead of say he's a joke instead of what they would normally say, they said he's going to ruin ron desantis and take him out.

steve kornacki, who and what do republican voters want? >> they still the candidate they put you.n 2016 and 2020 and that's donald trump. a monmouth poll taken a week ago, it was open ended. you tell us who do you want to be your candidate in 2024? donald trump leading the way at 43%. most notably that's a big gain for trump, this same poll asked this question back in december, he was trailing ron desantis in december, remember, republicans were coming off a rough midterm election, lot of people were pointing the finger at donald trump and his claims about the 2020 election. desantis was re-elected in a monstrous landslide in florida. donald trump has pulled far ahead. desantis a distant second. the man getting in today, chris christie, you don't even see his name on this list, he's not registering in the most recent poll that's significant because the republican national committee has announced its criteria for inclusion in its debates. you got to be at 1% in a couple polls. for christie that's his first challenge is to hit that 1% threshold in a couple of polls. that's one big q

to help us break down the numbers, steve kornacki at the big board and matthew dowd, former chief strategisteney 2004 presidential campaign. steve, i know you've been digging into these poll numbers. what's your big-picture tway? >> a couple things, chris. hard to ignore. the indictment of donald trump in the last few weeks, also coming within the last month or so, ron desantis formally getting into the race and really beginning his campaign. no evidence of any kind of a bump for desantis. as you say, no evidence that trump is taking any kind of a hit with republican voters in the wake of this indictment. the big picture dynamic in this republican race remains the same. it's donald trump very far out in front, and then ron desantis, the only other of the republican candidates who is in double digits. he's just over 20%. he's far behind trump. but nobody else is out of single digits here. notable, chris christie who is at zero in our last poll and making attacks on donald trump as a centerpiece of his campaign strategy moving up to 5% in this poll. we asked republican voters do you have a pos

to more, let's go to steve kornacki at the big board, mark mckinnon from the circus on showtime and sove, let me start with how republicans have made it clear that they have guidelines for candidates if they want to get on the august 23rd debate stage. how far away is chris christie from making the cut? >> yeah, this is the really interesting question because christie is telegraphing this intent to go after trump in a way that maybe we haven't seen other republicans go after trump. but that is the question. will he get the chance to it on a debate stage. so here is the criteria the rncs has put out. they say that between -- this is between the start of july and 48 hours before that debate, at some point in that window of time, to get on the stage you have to poll at at least 1% in three national polls, or 1% in two national polls and plus one of the early state polls. that would be new hampshire, iowa, nevada, south carolina. christie notably launching his campaign in new hampshire indications that he will pay particular attention to new hampshire, maybe he is hoping that he could qual

steve kornacki is breaking down the data for us.d security adviser, is with us as well. dasha, we're waiting this official announce the event in iowa, where you are. but pence is already out with that announcement video. what's his message? >> reporter: there's a reason why pence chose the hawkeye state for his formal announcement today. he believes this state is fertile ground for his faith-based brand of republicanism. today will be a great test for that. this is going to be an uphill climb for anyone looking to challenge the former president. but particularly, for the man who served alongside him. and i'm going to be looking to see what his message is once he starts really talking to voters here because we already saw florida governor ron desantis sharpen his attacks on the formerer president once he jumped into the race. he's hedged his words when it comes to his former boss, especially on january 6th. that's his biggest contrast. a lot of voters have been angered by pence's actions on that day. he did talk to us briefly about t

we always count on steve kornacki to give us a sense of how people are feeling with your poll numbers. give me a sense of the reaction, steve, to what has gone down in a big way from the supreme court. >> we will see what it brings. this is a topic that's been polled extensively through the years. a couple of patterns emerge when you look at the numbers over the years on this. basically, the pattern is this. the more broad, the more general you ask a question about affirmative action or about programming to try to enhance and increase diversity, the more support. the more specific you get with hiring decisions, the less popular it gets. you have probably seen this number thrown around a little today from our nbc news poll in april. we asked about affirmative action. is affirmative action still needed as long as there are no rigid quotas? there's slight majority support, 53%. that's a change if you go back a decade. a decade ago, it was 45%. it has increased over the last decade when you ask about affirmative action with no rigid quotas. when you ask about admissions programs that are

. >> i have our steve kornacki standing by right knew with us. everybody please stay with me, and thank you, i'm really appreciating all of your perspectives on this, an important issue that impacts millions and millions of americans. steve, bring us the numbers because you're a data guy. what are you finding when it comes to affirmative action and the potential impact of this decision? >> yeah, there have been lots of polls taken through the years asking about affirmative action, asking specifically about the use of race and ethnicity as criteria, as part of criteria for college admissions. take you through the numbers that we have on this because they've been pretty consistent. so i think there's a couple of layers to this. when you ask this question, this is from a "washington post" poll several months ago. in general, they asked, programs designed to increase racial diversity on college campuses. what's your attitude in general towards that concept. basically about two-thirds of all americans think that's a good concept, and that cuts across r

for more, let's bring in nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki at the big board. >d to 2024, both in terms of the republican primary situation and then the question of whoever emerges on the republican side against joe biden, what dynamics would define that matchup. let's take a look at the president himself, joe biden. the bottom line number here when it comes to his job approval rating in our poll, 43%. last time we took a poll back in april, biden was also at 43% there. any president seeking reelection at this point in his first term, to be at 43% is not a great place to be. we asked folks in this poll if they were concerned about biden's physical and mental health. more than two-thirds said it was a big or moderate concern to them, 68%. some signs of political vulnerability for joe biden. then you get to that question of he's not running against a blank slate. he'll end up running against somebody with a name. who would that person be? this is what the republican race looks like in our new poll here. donald trump with an outright majority in this poll, 51%. ron
