"chris jansing reports" starts right now. >>> good day, i am chris jansing live at msnbc headquarters in new york city. you have been following this step by step. deja vu all over again on the house floor. a new vote for speaker once again ending in a deadlock as jim jordan comes up short. in fact, he actually lost ground when compared to the first round. 22 republicans opposing jordan this time compared to 20 yesterday. two members, doug lamalfa and victoria sparts flipped and supported him. four others went in the other direction, securing the defeat not just for congressman jordan but arguably for the far right as a whole. now what? joining us nbc's ali vitali on capitol hill, and steve kornacki, brendan buck an aid to former republican speakers paul ryan and john boehner who's an msnbc political analyst, and david drucker, senior writer at "the dispatch." okay, al what now? what are the conversations? what happen

let's go right to steve kornacki, that has been monitoring the vote. steve? >> yeah, again, what we have been monitoring here, these are the republicans who previously voted against jim jordan in the last ballot, has he won any of them over? so far six of them have voted, they have all voted against jordan, just based on the numbers from that quorum call that was taken before this vote, he could only afford five defections. the sixth means he has no mathematical path if everybody continues to vote as expected. that quorum call and there you go, jake elsie from texas, now seven have been cast, all antijordan. there is no path for jordan to win the speakership on this ballot. not a surprise and the question now just becomes as you look down this list, is he going to win over any of these other names who have previously been voted against him. the only positive thing, if you can say positive thing for jordan so far is as of yet there are no new no votes against jordan. there are a couple of members who we were questioning, wondering early if they might flip on t

nbc's steve kornacki is here to break it all down form us. lle brewster is on the campaign trail in iowa talking to voters. steve walk us through it this morning. >> donald trump still an overwhelming advantage, far more than 2-1 over his nearest foe. actually nearest foes. nikki haley has moved up into a tie with ron desantis for second place. they're the only two other republican candidates in double digits, above 10%. this poll was conducted just before pence dropped out of the race. you can see where he was running. he was down to 2% in iowa. he was staking basically everything on iowa as a launching pad for his campaign. surely he was seeing similar numbers to this, and that played a role in his decision. take a look at how the numbers have moved since the last time we took a poll in iowa. that haley movement is one of the stories. she was at 6% and has jumped to 16%. desantis has been running second to trump all year. he dropped three points. that accounts for the tie. desantis had been 13 points ahead of haley in august. now they're tie

. >> we have our capitol hill reporters gathering the latest information, our steve kornacki is standingy at the big board. also with us is republican strategist and msnbc political analyst susan del percio and former democratic congressman max rose of new york. >> so steve, let's go over the numbers. what are the numbers telling you about jordan's chances in this third vote? anything could change for him? >> yeah, i mean, look, i think the expectation is it's going to go from bad to worse for jim jordan on this third ballot. the question would be how much worse and then what would happen as a result of that? put this in some perspective, what you're looking at here, these are all of the republicans who voted against jim jordan on the last ballot, on the second ballot. the total number here is 22. so there were 22 republicans who voted against jim jordan. it meant that he got a total of 199 votes to be speaker of the house. assuming that everybody is there and voting, the magic number is going to be 217. so he was significantly short of that. it means he would need to win over the vast m

. >>> joining us now, steve kornacki and brendan buck. let's talk about this resolution.y are still negotiating amongst themselves, both parties, as to what are the terms. i think from what we have heard from inside the democratic conference, one of the demands, bottom line, is not renegotiating the debt ceiling agreement of july and going forward with a budget. >> a couple interesting things just that i'm looking at. we have on the board here how it got to this right now. these are the republicans who voted against jim jordan. there were 22 of them. overnight, there were a number of other republicans who started to issue statements that they would jump ship. they had been voting for jordan, they would jump ship. he was redheading in the wrong direction. this was going to get worse. i think two things that are worth keeping in mind. it's a huge if here, but if this deal with mchenry taking over with more expanded powers for a limited period, if they are able to get there -- which seems to be what they are trying to do -- let's say it's through january 3rd, republicans are

appears now that mike johnson of louisiana is the new speaker of the house, but let me go to steve kornacki who is tracking it for us as he always does. steve, what can you tell us? >> he definitely will be the next speaker of the house. there are only a handful of votes still left to come. you see johnson now at 218. there are 220 republicans voting today in that chamber we know, so only two more to come, and the big thing is this. we've been tracking all of the republicans who voted against jim jordan at any point, all of the republicans who come from biden districts who night think that perhaps johnson is too conservative for their district, and we've tracked all of the republicans who voted present in that conference meeting last night, every single one of them voted for johnson. you can see it here, not a single defection, a broad range of republicans here who had objected to previous nominees like jim jordan. they're all on board here. tom kean a republican from new jersey, that's a biden district republican. kay granger, she had objected to jim jordan. she votes for johnson. mike gar

here to break down the numbers is steve kornacki. steve, i guess we call it the undercard race.t give us the top lines here. what does the polls show in iowa? >> here's the bottom line. 76 days until the big day in iowa. as you mentioned, donald trump continuing to lead overwhelmingly here. notably desantis, who has been running in second all year, joined by nikki haley in second place. that trump lead, though, one number to keep in mind as we ask folks is your mind made up? are you definitely for the candidate. nearly two-thirds of trump voters say, that's it. i'm settled. nobody else has a depth of support that matches that. it is not that he's that far ahead. a lot of that support looks locked in. >> by the way, it brings up the point made again and again and again, if you want to take on trump, you got to get it down to a two-person race. nikki haley is the one who has got a little momentum now. >> this is what the momentum looks like because we took this poll in august. back then she was at 6%. she's gained ten points since august. desantis has dropped three. that's movemen

let's bring in national political correspondent steve kornacki at the big board. place and who is it? >> for a distant second place, 78 days before the caucuses, this is what our new poll shows. trump with an overwhelming advantage here. desantis, who has been running second in iowa and nationally and elsewhere all year has been joined for a tie in second place by nikki haley, the former south carolina governor and u.n. ambassador. we took a poll with the des moines register in august and you could see that is haley, a ten-point jump for her since august. she was 6%. now she's 16%. desantis dropped off by three points. trump added one to his support. one thing to keep in mind with the trump support, you see that massive lead. there's a depth to his support that we are seeing in our poll. nearly two-thirds, 63% of trump's backers say, their minds are already made up and they are definitely voting for him. that definitely voting for number for any of the other candidates is much, much lower. it's another layer to that advantage that trump has. yes, we do have a conte

and let's not forget as steve kornacki pointed out. 20 votes didn't go for jim jordan right now, 19 didn't go for the last speaker and that went on for five excruciaing days before kevin mccarthy was elected. do we have five days when you look at what's happening on the ground right now, governor? >> first of all, in regard to that situation, the israelis are facing an extremely difficult situation. they want to move and be in a position to be able to totally dismantle hamas. when you talk to people who are experts -- i served on the defense committee for 18 years. when you look at the tunnels you have in gaza city, which is clearly one of their focuses, chris, i have to tell you that people remember fallujah in iraq and the hand-to-hand street, house-to-house fighting and the casualties. israel has to be able to stand up and dismantle hamas. but they want to be in a position where they do it in a way in which they don't punish civilians. it's difficult to do, but that is their goal. the large scale invasion has been held off because i think they're trying to figure out the best strategy f
