for more on the nbc news poll, i'm joined by steve kornacki to break down the numbers. dlines here, steve. >> absolutely. i think the biggest headline, this. donald trump does lead joe biden 48% to 44% in our poll. but this is a tightening from our last poll. you can see three months ago, donald trump had a five-point lead against the current president. that five-point lead now down to two points. there's progress here for biden in the last three months. >> coming after the state of the union. and he's had a campaign blitz. >> in the democratic primaries such as they were, coming to an end, there's democrats rallying around biden. also, this slight improvement here for biden tracks with a slight improvement in his job approval rating. it now sits at 42%. go back to our last poll. look at this. he was an all-time low for him last time around. now back over 40%. this is the highest biden's job approval has been in our poll since last spring. so, again, these are encouraging signs for joe biden, although, broader picture here, this 42% approval rating, history says probably

steve kornacki, good morning.ell us about the pool of potential jurors for this trial? >> we always talk about manhattan, and this is the manhattan district attorney, and folks outside that area, one of the five boroughs in new york city, and they are interchangeable. new york city as a whole, that's what you are looking at here, five boroughs in new york city. donald trump got 66% and donald trump got 2%, but that differenters by borough. you start here. this is staten island. this is the outlier and this is red. donald trump actually won staten island. this is by far the smallest of the five boroughs, and there's a succession to try and get it removed from this, and you look at brooklyn, biden got 77%, and the bronx, 83% for biden, and then manhattan, nearly 87 for biden, so among the five boroughs, manhattan is the bluest of the five boroughs. then the question sort of becomes why is manhattan so blue, and even in the blue city why does it stand out for being this democratic, and it has to do with the demograph

joining us now, nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki. explain this to us, steve. why would this change the calculus for both president trump and president biden? >> it's one electoral vote but it could be very significant. take a look, this is where things ended in 2020. biden winning 306-272. just because of the census reapportionment, some states gained electoral votes, some lost, the same combination, if you re-ran under the new math, it would be biden 303, trump 235. trump would start out with three more votes than he finished with last time. if trump is going to beat biden, what's his most efficient path? it would be winning the states that were the closest that lost. the closest would be arizona, 10,000 vote margin. if trump got arizona, the second closest would be georgia. if trump got georgia, it would be 262. now, that's where things get interesting. because as stands right now, to get over 270. he would have to win, pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, but watch this, because the trump campaign thinks it can flip nevada. it lost

our own steve kornacki dives deep into the jury pool coming up. >>> but we start with that new phase in donald trump's new york city trial, just getting under way again as we speak. about 90 minutes ago, 18 per spective jurors made it through the questionnaire without being dismissed or excused. they're not on the jury yet. having survived the 42 written questions and then answered more questions from lawyers on both sides, the judge just asked them to step outside. it is possible they could deal with striking jurors now. so the question is, will any of them survive? trump himself is said to be watching potential jurors at times, at other times leaning back and closing his eyes. and he smiled when one of them said they read his book, the art of the deal. our reporters described trump as being more alert and in better spirits than he was yesterday. that didn't stop him from slamming judge merchan again as he arrived at the courthouse and once again offering a defense to the hush money allegations against him. >> mark it down as a legal expense, i didn't know. mark it down as a legal e
