and my favorite comics were probably richard pryor, steve martin, andy kaufman. i read a lot of lenny bruce. and -- but my comedy is nothing like it was now. and i think probably in the late '80s is when i really started finding my voice. and it became less of a -- of trying to shoe horn into a style and it became -- it did a lot of stupid, silly stuff like funny, silly, weird things. but i got mislabeled or i think mistakenly labeled as a political comedian because after 9-11 -- i talk now and have been for a long time just what i've observed in the day or what's happening around me or my life and my dealing with being an atheist jew in a religious, baptist area where i grew newspaper georgia. and after 9-11 that was -- as it was with most of us, it was forefront in my consciousness and i was talking about it and people sort of assumed i was a political comedian. i wasn't. i wasn't then and i'm not now. i do talk about it sometimes and almost now feel a slight sense of obligation to talk about it. but it was usually more kind of auto biographical stuff. the last

martin matter. i want to bring in our panel and talk about that. hea steve hasting and julie and charles.es, to whom was he speaking today and was it effective? >> i thought it was a political speech addressed to his constituency on the left which i thought was unfortunate. even though it sounded like a philosophical speech addressed to the whole nation. i gave him and holder credit all week for trying to deracialize the issue and what obama did, i think, unfortunately today is to deracialize it. the statement after the verdict on saturday, i think it was, was to talk about we have to honor what the jury decided. then he spoke about helping our communities, thinking about our neighbors and gun control. but it wasn't about race and as we know from the trial, race was not an issue in the trial. the prosecution didn't speak of race. the jury said it wasn't an issue. the fbi investigation didn't find any hint of racism but obama reinjected it. to give him the benefit of the doubt and i'm not sure why i still do. three days in a row, i probably ought to consult a physician by now. i think the

steve. >> it's interesting. that's not what i was going to say. that is an interesting exchange. mike enzi gave an interview last week to jonathan martinork times." he talked about a phone call he had with liz cheney said in effect she called me to say she might be running. sort of left it at that then, yesterday, he comes up with this new detail from that phone call where she apparently said, according to enzi, she called him not only to say that she was running but that she wouldn't run if he was retiring. which raises the obvious question why didn't he say that in his initial interview with jonathan martin? it would have been the lead of the piece. the most significant news to come out of that interview. makes you wonder if mike enzi is making that up. in terms it ever the broader race, taps very interesting race and difficult one for the republican party. liz cheney is, i think, the kind of republican that post 2012 the party has been saying it wants to run. she is tough. she is smart. she is articulate. she is dynamic. she does all of these things. she is conservative down the line. and, you know, presumably would be a pretty good

martin's mother earlier today. one of the toughest balancing act, questioning a victim's mother. did he pull it off? thank you for being with me tonight. steve, this is tough. they had to call the mother obviously, the prosecution, a little bit of an emotional move there. right at the end of the prosecution's case in chief. what did you think? >> i think as you said, it was absolutely necessary, and it is a good piece of evidence. if anybody can identify the voice on that tape it is his mother. but the reality is, of course, it cuts both ways, because she, of course, is going to want to hear his voice, so her testimony is somewhat junior mined. one additional point that came out of testimony, to put this into context to remind the jurors, just what is going on here. a young man lost his life and that's terrible. >> it is. that's tragic and the defense has to get up to question her, of course, and you've got six women on the jury. >> but it was an a, b, and back to a proposition. the fbi voice expert said, a, i can't identify who is screaming. b, a relative may be in a better position, that's why this witness was set up. and then there is lis

martin. the the question this morning is whether steve ballmer is doing the right thing. place like zynga, did you say to yourself this is a good thing, this is a bad thing? if you are microsoft, how are you doing this morning? >> it's goed to lose somebody, but the fact of the matter is microsoft is in need of a restructuring. restructuring has to happen now. it's a critical junkture for microsoft. i think he knows that. if you look at what he said in his annual report letter, ballmer, he has been talking act if need to go to a devices an services business. strefing away from software. so they, microsoft has not been that, it's going to be an interesting situation to see if they can pull this off. if you look at the stock price the investors are responding well to what ballmer is saying. the question is whether he can deliver on what he's talking about. >> so far this restructuring seals to be done in secret. not a lot of people seem to understand what the plan is. is that a good thing? >> i actually think it is a good thing. think the fact that people are nervous inside

now, steve, with the supreme court decision in the voting rights case, now with the trayvon martin cases a renewed vigor and purpose. so, we're asking people of all backgrounds to join us in washington, d.c. on august 24th when there's going to be an historic effort. we do need to express ourselves through social media, through appropriate means, but we have to remember that this is not over and that the cause and the quest for justice and civil rights of the 21st century continues. but we, i think, do not want to discourage expression. we want to encourage responsible and disciplined expression. >> there was a writing in "the new yorker," the idea, are there going to be violent protests or anything, and he said you'll see riots if maybe you're expecting one thing and you get another. >> that is part -- >> stereotyping. >> that's stereotyping. we do not think the rest of ourselves as americans. for the most part, it was nonviolence. look at us as americans and how beautiful we are, we believe in healing, we believe in getting to the highest potential, we believe in continuing the civil
