steve knibbs. hurricane milton made landfall with its full force and spread slowly across central florida.r the gulf of mexico, the storm showed its strength, ripping up waves nearly 30ft high. in st petersburg the roof was ripped open on a stadium set up to house thousands of emergency responders. milton was taking hold. now at this point it's too dangerous to evacuate safely, so you have to shelter in place and just hunker down. but if you start to get in a situation where trees are snapping, power is popping, you do have to treat it like a tornado. tornadoes hit in several places. the sheriff's office in st lucie said that people there have died as a result. in fort myers earlier, some buildings were destroyed in an instant. these windows blew out. i was about probably right here when it happened. my cat over there on the desk, i grabbed the two dogs and like, run under my bed. that was it. probably, probably one minute total. across florida, hurricane milton's power intensified. strong winds, heavy rain battered the west coast, but it didn't stop some wanting to witness it first—hand.

page, more on that and moments but we begin with hurricane milton as it takes aim at florida's gulf coast. or weather and meteorologist steve bender is live in florida with the very latest. steve, this looks like a monster. >> yes trace, we're looking at a storm surge up to 15 feet where i am and this area still recovering from hurricane helen. shutters are up, we are in this circle where it's a beautiful beach town and you notice here's the watermark of this ice cream shop, still from the last hurricane, about 2 feet. as we keep looking down, you will notice each one of these businesses has been completely gutted because of that storm surge or boarded up. many businesses did not come back to take anything down because they are now bracing for milton. everywhere on this island, this barrier island, has just been completely decimated from helene. we are expecting twice as bad of an impact from milton. a storm surge up to 15 feet, listen to noah, i talked with him earlier about collecting sandbags at last-minute. >> we're not in a flood zone but we have some motion stuff and i'm nervous about them falling. we have some livest

and here's steve. >> all right, sal, thank you. we'll get to hurricane miltonther. it does look a little cooler here for us today. a little bit still 90s inland, but i think a little cooler coast. and bay today. now, only category four, 145mph. went through eyewall reconstruction here, but it should get back up at least close to category five later today. the biggest concern would be it looks like on wednesday, coming in as a category three. it looks like tampa saint pete is in the mix here, which would be a rarity. they really haven't had a direct hit since 1921. they haven't had one. the storm surge is the key. why? because the topography, the gulf is shallow, whereas the atlantic side drops off dramatically. so that's the big concern here. i think this has actually been trending a little more south. but tampa saint pete are only about 43 and 48ft at their highest point above sea level. so that's the big concern. you know, direct hit, of course, but the storm surge is the one that could really cause a major damage for us. the little west wind in the city, you

steve paulson back up with us this morning for a look at the forecast. >> it's milton is now a cat five now. >> so earlier than yesterday. >> earlier tomorrow this is the there have only been seven hurricanes that have gone from 1 to 5 in less than 24 hours. this one did it in 18. i think it ties for the second fastest ever. wilma, if you will, was the fastest. it did it in 12 hours. but marie and milton have done it in 18, so there it is, 160mph. category five it looks like. and although, as i was telling a friend of mine, i never trust any of these tracks or anything anymore, hopefully it will come down to at least a cat three by the time it makes landfall on the gulf coast side, but you know, 48 hours away. believe me, so much can change. but to go from 1 to 5, i mean, in a blink, it's just amazing. but when might get up to 165mph in the next 24 hours, you can complain about the heat, but boy, get in line. there's a long line. san anselmo, concord, san jose, santa rosa, napa, redwood city, oakland and vallejo all between 100 and 104. yesterday, the city hit 97. that was a record high
